A thirty pence coin issued in May AD 1690 by James II to finance his abortive campaigns against William III; this type of coin is widely known as 'gun money' because of its base metal (copper alloy) composition. Obverse:- Portrait of James II facing left, beaded border at rim. Legend around 'IACOBVS II DEI GRATIA'. Reverse:- A crown and crossed sceptres, the denomination 'XXX' and date '1690' above. Ornate J and R to either side, month 'May' below. Legend around '[MAG] BR FRA ET HIB REX'.

A Post Medieval copper alloy Irish "gun money" shilling of James II (AD 1685 - 1691), Dublin or Limerick mint, issued May 1690. This example is 1.8mm thick and 22.5mm in diameter. It weighs 4.9g. Other examples on the database locally include 4 examples from Somerset- including SOM-47B038 and SOM-EA3298. This is the first "gun money" shilling recorded from Devon.

A copper-alloy post-medieval Irish 'hibernia' halfpenny of James II, dating to AD 1691. HIBERNIA reverse, depicting Hibernia seated left and holding a cross. These 'hibernias' are a type of 'gun money', a coinage issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne. They were the last attempt to establish such a coinage before giving up in 1691. To produce these 'hibernias', shillings were recoined as halfpennies or farthings in the Irish town Limerick.
