A copper alloy 'gun money' half-crown of James II, dated 1690. These were promisory tokens made from scrap metal (including melted-down gun barrels, hence the name) issued to supporters in Ireland to be exchanged for their value in silver or gold after a Jacobite victory. The obverse is worn but shows a bust facing left and the legend IACOBVS II / DEI . GRATIA The reverse, also very worn, shows crossed sceptres behind a crown, with the initials I and R either side.
