A copper alloy Irish gunmoney sixpence of James II (1685-1691), dating to 1689. See Spink (2003: 171) no.6583. Obverse: Laureate bust left Legend: [IACOBVS II] DEI GRATIA. Reverse: Crown over crossed two sceptres, VI between, J R positioned either side. Legend: 1689. MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX These coins Irish issues produced by James in his war to reclaim the throne from William III and are known as gunmoney pieces as they were made from guns and other ammunition melted down to pay James’ troops. They were tokens to be exchanged for silver coins at the end of the of the war.

A Post Medieval copper-alloy Irish 'gun money' sixpence of James II (AD 1685-1688), dated January 1689. Mint of Dublin. Dimensions: diameter: 21.22mm; weigh: 3.00g. These coins were minted during the Williamite War in Ireland (AD 1689-1691) and were to be redeemed for silver coinage after the war. They were made from old cannons, bells and scrap metal. A corroded but partly legible copper coin of James II, issued as substitute coinage in Ireland during the campaign against William III and Mary. These are are often known as 'gun money' and were made of melted down onjects of high copper content, including bells and weaponry. Obverse:- Bust of James II, left, legend around possibly '[JACOBVS II] DEI G[RATIA] Reverse:- Mostly indistinguishable, but parts of the legend 'FRA ET HIB' are discernible.
