A copper alloy "gun money" shilling of James II (AD 1685-1688), dating to 1688. Obverse: laureate and draped bust left. IACOBVS II DI GRATIA; Reverse: Crown with two sceptres crossed behind. As Spink 2003, p. 174 No. 6595. Measurements: 25.9mm diameter, 1.8mm thickness, weight 5.26g.

An Irish 'gun money' shilling of James II, dated 1690 (month unclear). Gun money coins were made issued during the Irish Williamite war of 1689-1691. The coins were made from old cannon balls and other scrap metal. James II intended to exchange these coins for silver when he reclaimed the throne, but this never happened.
