Copper alloy Irish 'Gun Money' halfcrown of James II (AD 1685 - AD1688 (in Ireland AD 1685 - AD 1691), dating to the period 1690. Reverse depicts crossed spears behind a double arched crown, with 'J' to left of crown and 'R' to right, 1690 above and May below. Spink (2002) page 169 - 170, number 6580B. These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne and and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value.
