Post medieval countermarked copper alloy penny of George III dating to 1806 to 1807, probably reused between 1806 and 1853. Spink 3780. The coin is worn and has been countermarked on the obverse with the letters S[Q?]UANCE diagonally across the bust. This is presumably a business name although it is not listed by Scott (1975). He (ibid, 6-11) suggests such countermarked cons were every common in the period 1790 to 1850: with legislation to ban the practice only coming out in 1853, and with some re-use of demonetarised coins after 1859 (ibid 13).

A post-medieval copper alloy coin; from size and weight probably a George III 'Cartwheel' penny of 1797, Both surfaces are corroded and no details can be seen. A series of notches have been made into the edge of the coin, probably with a file. These vary in size and in position round the flan. The largest is 4.5 mm square, the next, 11 mm round the edge is 2.4 mm square, and third, 10.5 mm from this, is slightly smaller at 2.2 mm square. 13 mm from this is a shallow nick on the edge of the coin, possibly a shallow notch that has become worn, or an aborted atempt at creating a notch…
