A worn and incomplete late Medieval Venetian soldino (late) or 'Galley halfpenny' of Doge Agostin Barbarigo, (AD.1486-1501), minted at Venice between 1486-1501. The edge of the flan has torn away on one side of the coin.
Measurements: diameter: 11mm; weight: 0.13g
Discussion: The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change.

A medieval, silver coin: a Venetian soldino of Doge Agostino Barbarigo, dating from AD 1486 - 1501. It is 12.7mm in diameter and 0.3mm thick. It weighs 0.32gm.
These coins circulated in England during the 15th and 16th centuries as halfpennies, because there was a lack of small change at the time (Daubney, unpublished, Identifying late Medieval Venetian coins). Coins of Barbarigo are rarely found except for along the south coast of England (ibid), so this is an unusual discovery for Lincolnshire.

During the 15th and 16th centuries the English economy experienced a serious shortage of English-struck halfpennies. In order to fill this gap people began using foreign coinage such as the soldino, meaning 'little shilling', which entered into English currency through Venetian traders.
