A clipped, damaged and incomplete medieval silver penny, probably of Henry IV (1399-1413), 'heavy coinage' dating to 1399-1412, mint: York, early variety (North 1350). Ref: North 1991: 66; Wren 1995: 103. The coin is damaged with approximately 25% of the outer circle (containing the inscription) missing, broken around the line of the beaded inner circle with irregular breakage at either end; cracks are visible along other parts of the inner circle. The fields are worn with little detail now visible, and the surviving outer edge also shows evidence that the coin …

Silver Coin. Penny. Alaistair Wardle identifies this as 'a York heavy coinage penny of Henry IV (1399-1413). He kindly notes 'there are only 2 dies for York heavy pennies - this is the one with obverse legend ending in FRANC'. Obverse description: Facing bust with shoulders, crown with tall central fleur. Reverse description: Long cross with central quatrefoil with pellet in centre, three closely-spaced pellets in each quadrant. Spink 2004 (page 174) tends to confirm identification, though this coin is very worn - all legends lost - and perhaps clipped. Diameter: 15.93m…
