A gold quarter noble of Edward III (1327-1377) dated to the pre-treaty period AD 1351-61. A more precise identification cannot be achieved due to the wear and condition of the coin. The external edge of the flan is feathered and the edge is folded. A pentangular shaped hole is present through the centre of the coin. The edges are slightly clipped.
The record and coin have been discussed with Dr John Naylor (National Finds Advsior medieval coinage) who notes that:
the central piercing is a a rather untidy looking hole so I can't imagine it's intended for adaptation, rather it was probably more likely to demonetise / take it out of circulation. Similar shaped crude holes can be seen in the large number of pierced silver coins reported to PAS with an untidy hole hit through them and these seem, in general, to have been for pretty poor coins, clipped, worn and incomplete. There's always the possibility it may be for other non-economic reasons but there's not enough evidence to tell in this case (see https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/903407 for a double-pierced example). That's also one important point, we know from hoard evidence that pierced coins found their way back into the currency so it could have been adapted for something and then went back into circulation. Here is another example like yours, pierced in the centre: https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/716355.
As such this coin should not be considered under the treasure act but it is an important example of a poorly understood monetisation practice that by recording examples in more detail we may understand in the future.
