An incomplete silver short cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Class 8b3 (Mass 8c; North 981/3) dating to c.AD1242-7, moneyer: Nichole, mint: Canterbury. Refs: North 1994: 223; Mass 2001: 61-2, pl. 80, nos 2149-52.
The coin is poorly struck, worn and chipped along a fracture line from the edge into the flan (at around 2 o'clock on the obverse).
Obverse: Crowned bust facing with sceptre / [ ]S R/EX
Reverse: Voided short cross penny with quatrefoil in each angle / [ ]hOLE ON C[ ]

Laura Burnett Comments: this coin is most likely to be from class 8 specifically because of the diagnostic beard, the style is good enough for 8b but given the cross pommee X I'd suggest 8c.
