Silver penny of John, short cross class 6b, moneyer Rauf of London, originally completely folded when found, c.1213-15 The practice of folding coins over in this way, done whilst one was making a prayer, dates mainly to the late 12th and 13th centuries. It seems to have been native to this country and indeed was known as 'the English Custom.'
