A silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216). The coin belongs to Class 6a1, dating from 1210-1213, identified by the shape of the letter X in REX, which Wren (1992, p.55) describes as being formed from two thin straight strokes with the limbs arranged as a flattish saltire and not at right angles to each other. The coin is cut vertically through the obverse, showing the king's head with two equal sized curls on the left side. The inscription remaining on the reverse reads [WA]LTER.O[NLV], so the moneyer is Walter. The London mint is assumed because Walter's name does …
