Silver penny of Stephen I a rare variant. Recorded by Dr Martin Allen at the Fitzswilliam museum on the EMC database as EMC 2017-0216. Dr Allen states that 'there are only 11 known coins from that die, and it is the first to be recorded on the EMC database. It's a Durham mint, north east variant, moneyer Fobund. A coin from that die is in the British Museum, BMC 252. The diameter is 19mm

A medieval penny of Stephen (1135-54), possibly irregular type based on 'Watford' type; mint and moneyer uncertain, possibly Safari of Colchester. Ref: North 1994: 203-15; Mack 1966: cf. nos. 177-8. The obverse is mostly illegible (reading S[ ]). The reverse reads [ ]RE[ ]N CO(L). This would fit the inscription listed by Mack (1966: 41) for a coin of Safari of Colchester (SAFARE:ON:COL) listed under North 873 (Mack 1, 'Watford type).
