An incomplete Early Medieval silver penny in the name of Edward the Elder, probably a Danelaw imitation (see below for discussion), Horizontal/Two-Line type (North 649) dating 899-924, moneyer: possibly Beornferth (blundered). Ref: North 1991: p. 126-7.  Obverse: +EADVVEARD R[ ] retrograde Reverse: BE[ ]OrN/ENFI.  Measurements: diameter: 19.05mm; and weight: 1.38g.  The crude lettering, retrograde obverse inscription and blundered reverse inscription suggest that this coin is probably Danelaw imitation of the coinage of Edward the Elder although this is not certain. …

CORONER'S REPORT Description of find Two 10th Century AD silver pennies fused together and broken into two pieces, only the reverse of each is visible. The two coins are bent inwards towards coin 2 (see below), and broken along the bend line. The break is modern. The combined weight is 3.03g, but the coins are slightly chipped in two places, so total weight would have been slightly higher.
