Dr Gareth Williams, The British Museum, has examined images of this coin and others found with it and identified them as modern replicas produced from dies by Mr Trevor Ashmore. Examples of these replicas can be found in the British Museum, Coins and Medals, forgeries cabinet and all four examples of these replica coins are represented in an upcoming catalogue of modern replicas/fakes.
It reproduces an early-Medieval Kingdom of Wessex Penny of Alfred, 'Edward the Elder' type. It is silver, 21mm in diameter and weighs 1.91g (29.4gn). It has a die axis of 3.

Mint: Probably Winchester, c.890
Reference: Brooke type 6; North 639. It is uncertain whether this is an official issue or good Viking copy.
