A worn uninscribed copper-alloy Iron Age stater of the Durotriges, South Western region, dating from c. 65 BC to AD 45. The coin is of the "Cranborne Chase" type. Due to wear, the shape of the coin is sub-triangular - like that of a shield. On the obverse, all that remains is a vertical pin shape that covers almost half the surface, with a wide crescent above it and another narrow crescent shape to the right of this. Near the bottom right hand edge of the obverse, are a group of worn pellets. An uninscribed base silver Iron Age stater of the Durotriges, South Western region, dating to the period c.65 BCAD 45. The following comments are from Ian Leins, British Museum: 'The stater was produced in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties in about 80 - 50 BC. It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'.
