A very worn uninscribed gold quarter stater of the Western region/Dobunni, dating to the late Iron Age (c. 60 BC-AD 10). The obverse is plain with no inscription, but the reverse fits within Rudd’s ‘Sunburst Little Horse’ type = ABC no.2051, p.105; VA 1010-1; S.375; BMC 2942-46/3134.

Obverse: wreath, spike with three large pellets and sunburst across, crescents below Reverse: triple-tailed annulate horse right, cogwheel sun motif above, small animal (stylised foal?) below. See Rudd (2010: 103) no. ABC 2009. BMC 2942-6.  Coin measures 12.62mm in diameter, 1.62mm in thickness and weighs 1.32g.

During the Roman period, and perhaps earlier, the Dobunni inhabited an area covering the modern county of Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
