Object type: COIN HOARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A group of five silver coins; 3 groats and 2 halfpennies of Henry VI minted between AD 1422 and 1460.
Discussion: The hoard had a face value of £0 1s 1d in the 15th century.
They are of similar condition, of the same ruler and of two consistent types, and were found near one another with no other finds in the same area, suggesting they were originally a single group. The dating is suggestive of a deposition around the late 1450s or early 1460s, a period of considerable civil strife.

An incomplete cast incised medieval silver crucifix pendant of 15th to early 16th century date.
Description: The crucifix survives as the silver backing cross and attachment plate for a composite crucifix pendant. The cross is near complete though the one end of the long upright arm is broken and slightly bent. It seems probable that this included the now missing suspension loop. At the centre of one side, where the arms meet is an oval panel likely the solder point for the now missing crucified Christ figure.
On the opposite side there are incised letters at the end of eac…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
A gold, finger ingot of uncertain date, probably prehistoric.
Description: The ingot is sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded ends. It has a shallow D-shaped cross-section with slight dishing along this face. One end also has dip and pellet in likely indicating the ingate or pouring point of the molten metal into the mould for the ingot. The surfaces of the ingot are very irregular suggesting a coarse mould, possibly even an earth one.
Measurements: 67.5mm long, 12.22mm wide, 5.5mm thick and 36.77g in weight.
Discussion: The simplicity of the form and the lack of archae…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Description: Silver early post-medieval sharp-hooked clasp. The undecorated thin flat plate is trilobed, with the central lobe being pointed-oval in shape, larger and longer than the other two which are closer to being circular. The effect is that of a fleur-de-lis. Each lobe is pierced with a circular hole, with that in the larger lobe having a smaller diameter (1.3mm) than the flanking two (2.0mm). There are some small recent oblique scratches on the plate.
At the base of the plate are two small projections, one below the curve of each circular lobe. These create a straight lin…

Description: Hoard consisting of two copper-alloy Middle Bronze Age palstave axeheads. One is complete, the other is missing the blade end. Both are pitted and corroded.
Palstave 1 - complete. This palstave is corroded, but retains areas of shiny dark olive green surface. Description: Small gold post-medieval finger ring with internal posy (also poesy or posie) inscription. The ring is badly distorted, bent across a single axis, making it difficult to determine the exact diameter and the full detail of the posy. The cross-section is D-shaped in the best-preserved areas but more C-shaped elsewhere, suggesting crushing.
The posy is difficult to decipher, the beginning being obscured by an abrupt crease in the hoop. The first few letters appear to have been lightly engraved, with the end of the inscription carrying more weight. The letter form of the…

Description: Silver medieval to post-medieval aiglet or lace tag. Tapering cylindrical form with barely-visible longitudinal seam, closed rounded terminal end and open attachment end. The open end of the aiglet is tapered slightly inwards around the outside circumference possibly as a result of crimping the lace. Just short of the hollow attachment end a silver internal rivet survives, crossing diametrically from one side to the other and filed off flush on the surface.
Discussion: The seam is butted and there is a rivet, features consistent with Livings type 1 (Livings 2017, 18-…

Description: Silver alloy Roman snakes-head finger ring of Johns type Bii. Penannular circular hoop of D-shaped cross section with the bezel formed of two un-joined confronted snakes' heads. The heads are moulded in an oval, planoconvex section shape with a surrounding flange. Where both flanges meet in the middle of the bezel they have been fashioned to butt together squarely, but there is no evidence of any effort to join them permanently. The contoured convex upper surface of the head of each snake has a moulded longitudinal cleft in the centre. There is a predominantly black patin…

A gold “fede” ring with a bezel composed of two clasped hands. The shoulders have been shaped to resemble ornate cuffs that are styled to show a gathered cuff at the wrist, with flaring lace tumbling from the cuff. This clothing inspired theme continues to influence the decoration of the remainder of the hoop, which has a geometric pattern of lozenges interspersed with circular cells. This decoration is reminiscent of slashed brocade sleeves of an elaborate doublet or dress.

Description: A complete gold Latin cross pendant, with runic inscription, dating to the early medieval period (c.AD700-900).
The solid gold cross is of simple form: the long arm is uppermost, with a crude ‘repair’ piercing at the apex; the slight concavity along the upper edge is indicative of a previous worn piercing or attachment, and the terminal has been diagonally filed to ‘finish’ this arm following the repair. Almost the entire length of the arm is filled with an inscription comprising six runes; two parallel scratches to the right of the piercing appear…
