A fragment of a silver and niello-inlaid artefact: possibly part of a pinhead and shaft. The fragment comprises a flat piece of cast silver, the right side lost to a diagonal break and the left side apparently complete, possibly representing the remains of a pinhead. A narrow projection on the bottom edge, also broken off, may represent the remains of a pin-shaft. The shape of the fragment is suggestive of the body and tail of a bird shown in profile. The upper edge curves downwards away from the broken end, and then upwards again and around into a sub-semi-circular 'tail' with a s…

Description: A copper alloy strap-end with a silver rivet in situ. The strap-end comprises a rectangular sheet of copper alloy which has been folded in half. The open end has a circular perforation, presumably for a lost attachment rivet. A silver rivet with large circular head pierces the plate about two thirds down, towards the folded end. The front is decorated with an incised geometric design divided into three differently-sized fields. The field nearest the open end is rectangular and contains what appears to be a stylised, three-leafed or -petalled foliate motif. The central fie…

A middle to late Anglo Saxon copper alloy strap-end with niello decoration, of Thomas's Class A1 (Trewhiddle style). It is incomplete in so far as it is missing its two rivets. The strap-end is convex-sided with a split end and zoomorphic terminal. Around and behind the rivet holes is a fan-shaped field, delineated by a curved groove. The curve is further decorated with two short diagonal grooves leaning towards each other and below two inverted 'J' shapes (one back-to-front). Seen together this decoration is reminiscent of a palm leaf. At the opposite end of the strap-end is the wor…

A probable Anglo-Saxon, Early Medieval, lead alloy sword pyramid; a 7th century fitting from a scabbard strap. Although the term 'pyramid' is generally applied to this form of object due to its shape normally being a square pyramid, this example is in the form of a dome. The mount has a flat circular base with two D-shaped holes extending into the body of the mount and joining to form a tube behind the central bar. The mount is domed with a flat top which is decoated with an equal armed cross outlined with a groove within which are traces of another material, maybe niello. In each ang…

"Originally thought to have been parts of the same object, close inspection and analysis has shown that these two fragments come from two separate strap-ends. Each fragment is 25 mm in length, but the mid-section fragment has a silver content of approximately 97 per cent, while the endsection's silver content is approximately 93 per cent. Both are decorated in the Trewhiddle style; the midsection has six panels of plant and animal motifs, while the end section appears to have had a single panel with animal and interlace decoration, and terminates in a round-eared animal head with prom…

In terms of decoration, the strap end correlates with his Type 1, Sub-type bii: 'multifield Trewhiddle style strap ends with four fields of Trewhiddle style decoration' (Thomas 2000, 71, 87). The object is in very good condition and demonstrates a relatively even green patina, except on its undecorated lower side where…
