The strap end is an Early Medieval type, dated to the 8th to 9th century. Thomas classifies it as a Type A2. The strap end is made from cast copper alloy, which divides into two sheets. In plan the strap end is an elongated sub-oval. It has decoration on the upper plate. The upper face has a moulded and incised animal head terminal with oval shaped eyes. Behind the head there is a single panel of geometric design defined by niello. In profile the strap end appears to be solid at the zoomorphic terminal, but then does divide into two plates, forming a slim ‘

A cast copper-alloy Roman plate brooch of the zoomorphic type. Specifically, this is a good example of a three-dimensional sitting cock or hen. It takes the shape of an oval, pointed at one end with a protruding neck and head at the other. The reverse is hollow and features a broken catchplate at the head end and a double pierced lug at the tail end. The beginnings of a broken pin remain in the lugs, held in place by a crude copper-alloy penannular loop. Above this on the obverse are the beginnings of a flat tail, also now broken. Based on comparable examples the tail would have …

Mid Saxon-Late Saxon Strap-end in rather abraded condition, two rivets in split attachment edge. Animal-head terminal lacking detail, but niello inlay and large ears are visible. Above these a large panel of semi-symmetrical ornament, either foliar or zoomorphic, with niello inlay extends up onto the split end, there being no fan-shaped field. On the reverse of the terminal an oval (9mm x 5mm) patch of silvery material, probably solder, is of unknown purpose. 41mm x 12mm. Thomas' Class A, Type 1. 9th century.

Cast copper alloy late 8th/early 9th century Anglo-Saxon strap end, very corroded. It used to have double rivets at the split end, but both rivets and rivet holes are missing now. So is the terminal at the pointed end which was probably a small stylised animal head. The centre panel on the obverse was most probably decorated with one or more Trewhiddle-style beasts set against a niello background; the beasts would have had speckled bodies, as evidenced by the remains of speckled surface. The panel is too corroded and fragmentary to tell how many animals were displayed. Found at the …

Mid Saxon/Late Saxon incomplete strap-end of Thomas' Class A, outside edge / distal end missing. Two rivet holes in split end above an arrangement of five crescentic stamps (in place of the normal palmette in fan-shaped field motif). Both sides are followed by a groove. The area between these, where decoration would be expected, is concave and roughly finished, parts of the base stained silvery. Either decoration, most probably of niello and silver wire, has been entirely lost or was never applied. Length >35mm, width maximum 15mm, 7.5mm at proximal end. Split 11mm deep. 9th century.

This artefact was originally identified at a 16th - 17th Century dress fastener. Therefore the artefact was reported as a possible Treasure item and was sent to the British Museum. The British Museum's Post-Medieval artefact specialist (Dora Thornton) has suggested that the artefact is more likely to be a watch key than a dress-hook. The watch key is silver, with traces of what could be niello. The artefact is triangular in shape tapering to a point which appears to be the zoomorphic head of a bird. The opposite end of the triangle has been broken; the breaks do not look recent. The w…
