Copper alloy purse bar that consists of two oval cross section arms that flank a rectangular central block hub. The block hub has a hole that passed through the middle that mounts the spindle for the suspension loop. The loop has a small cylindrical neck and a large circular loop, on the base of the loop and passing through the hub is a narrowed bar that has a cylindrical collar. Incomplete and abraded Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy strap end of Thomas 2003, Class A, Type 5. The attachment end is missing, with the break cutting across the two rivet holes. Two rectangular cells beneath a fan-shaped field have lost almost all their niellon inlay and no silver wire has survived. An incomplete, medieval, copper alloy zoomorphic purse bar. In one view a human/animal face is clearly visible and when rotated 90 degrees a snake mouth can be seen swallowing the bar. The detail on the face is remarkable, with lines running from the eyes down the cheeks, and tiny grooves below the broken pivot point representing hair. Once rotated the face of a snake swallowing the bar can be clearly seen. Early Post Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting from a sword belt hanger. The plate is sub triangular in shape with a trifoliate terminal. The inner face is undecorated. The outer face has a finely executed raised foliate decoration within a beaded border. It has been inlaid with black niello. There are two rivet holes, both retaining remnant iron rivets. A fragment of a late Medieval copper alloy purse bar dating from c.1450-1500 AD. The fragment consists of part of the bar which is curved and tapers to one end and flattens to an oval end. The other end has an old break. The frame is L-shaped in cross-section and the underside has two small circular holes which would have been used to attach the bar to the purse bag. The surface of the bar has some residue of decorated cross-hatched inlaid niello. The fragment has a dark green patina. The purse bar is 110.6mm in length, 7.6mm in width, 2.5mm in thickness, and weighs 19.54g.
