Copper alloy object of uncertain date and function, although stylistically it is possibly early medieval in date (c. 500-1100 AD). The object is broadly shield shape in plan with a broken edges at the bottom and in the central part of the top edge (as photographed).  It is decorated on one side only with an elaborate frieze of incised lines and chevrons above a central panel of incised diamonds, triangles, ovals and, ring and dot motifs, with possible niello dots or pellets.  The reverse of the object is undecorated.  The object has patches of corrosion and damage, but …

An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600). The fragment measures: 33.…

A copper alloy unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date. It is a hemisphere or solid dome with niello lattice cross hatched grooved decoration on the convex top. The base is flat and there is no evidence of attachment, nor of breaks. There is a plain band round the base of the dome. The object has a thin patina of light green revealing some red metal. Traces of dark grey, probable niello survive in the grooves. It is 11.6mm tall, 15.3mm diameter and 12.6g. No close parallel has been identified on the PAS database. The use of niello cross hatching is frequently found on Tu…

Silver unidentified object. Fragment of a cast round section rod with two or more circumferentially incised bands of width 0.5mm which may retain inlay traces. Both ends are indented by up to 0.7mm, and there is a deep gouge in one side. The black surface and density may suggest this to be a fragment from a bead-like object made of silver, though the object lacks a stringing hole. The decorative inlay of silver objects is characteristic of the Middle Saxon period, though the condition of this fragment vitiates further comment. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850. In view …

Description: Three fragments of a medieval silver sheet object, possibly a scabbard chape, dating to c. AD 1200-1300. All three are decorated on one face with fields defined by engraved lines and filled with either rocker-arm engraving or niello. The other face is undecorated. The original find was too fragmentary to discern a possible pattern; the addition of two joining pieces show that there appears to be an abstract foliate design. Fragment 1: No original edge, broken across at least one rivet or attachment hole. The fragment is too small to determine what the decoration depi…

A fragment of a silver and niello-inlaid artefact: possibly part of a pinhead and shaft. The fragment comprises a flat piece of cast silver, the right side lost to a diagonal break and the left side apparently complete, possibly representing the remains of a pinhead. A narrow projection on the bottom edge, also broken off, may represent the remains of a pin-shaft. The shape of the fragment is suggestive of the body and tail of a bird shown in profile. The upper edge curves downwards away from the broken end, and then upwards again and around into a sub-semi-circular 'tail' with a s…

An unidentified copper-alloy object of uncertain date. The object comprises a tube, open at both ends, with a circular-sectioned aperture and six flat, longitudinal panels around its outside. One of these panels is decorated by a line of herringbone grooves, filled with a combination of niello and iron corrosion. the opposing panel has a central seam which is slightly open. At one end of the herringbone panel is a projection which tapers to a point and is decorated along its length by a series of niello-filled, transverse grooves. The use of niello, and the general form, suggest…

A very worn cast copper alloy of uncertain date or original extent. The object is rod-like, straight and slightly tapering, and 30mm long. The section is triangular and towards one end each facet has a groove which runs from the centre towards the present break. Each groove is infilled with the remains of a niello or silver inlay. The object is too corroded and incomplete to suggest a date or purpose although it appears to be ancient.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy object of 9th century date. The object measures 46mm in length and has one straight side and one side is shaped to fit the cast design. The surviving terminal is in the form of an animal head from whose mouth projects a rounded attachment loop. The head has flattened ears and small circular pits for the eyes, the latter probably intended to receive an inlay. Behind the head is a worn panel which is difficult to interpret and which has been inlaid with niello, a small patch of which survives. There are also two small patches which suggest the former pr…

A copper alloy unidentified object of probable Late Medieval date, probably 15th or 16th century. It is a bar which is a rounded rectangle in section, slightly curved in profile and tapering towards one end. Both ends appear to be patinated breaks. The upper face (on the outside of the curve) is decorated with a central incised line and diagonal lines running from the centre to the edge forming a palm like design. The grooves appear to have been inlaid with niello. At the wide end, three crescents form a flower like motif round a circular recess; all are again infilled. The object has…

Incomplete probably medieval copper alloy unidentified object. One end is broken (not recently) across a circular-sectioned bar which soon merges into a square-sectioned boss. This is decorated on three faces with a circle inlaid with a black substance, presumably niello. The circle are joined by two short similarly inlaid lines. On the opposite side of the boss the bar continues, expanding very slightly to an end, in the centre of which is a small conical projection. This final length of bar is decorated with a pair of longitudinal lines, again inlaid with the same material. The pair…

Description: Silver object inlaid with niello. It is a long oval in shape and made from two components, a sheet silver base and a heavy hollow-cast upper part. The upper part is D-shaped in cross-section, and has relief, engraved and inlaid decoration. To either end is an animal head, both identical. The snouts have narrow rounded ends with a pair of dots for nostrils; these may originally have been set with glass pellets, similar to but smaller than those in the eyes. There are niello-inlaid grooves dividing the nostrils from each other and the nose from the rest of the snout. The ey…

Description: Fragment of thick flat silver object with gold wire and niello decoration. One near-rectilinear corner survives, with two very slightly concave edges meeting at a tiny rounded knop. Around the surviving edges is a border consisting of a ridge with a groove outside. A drop-shaped recess, with the point towards the corner, is lined a little way in from the edge with a strip of plain gold wire. Gilded silver fragment of middle Anglo-Saxon date, perhaps a pin head. Treasure case no. 2011T584. Description: Fragment of silver, decorated on both faces with differing motifs, but gilded on only one. Both faces have motifs made up of grooves, and some of the grooves are coincident. Most of the fragment's edges are formed from coincident grooves, and so it is very hard to tell if they are original and deliberate, or whether it has been broken at these thin and fragile grooves; this question is addressed further below. The gilded face has niello inlay in the grooves. It has a p…
