It has two broad faces (front and back) and two 'shoulders' which curve downwards from the peak to a straight terminal. Each terminal has two projecting rivet-tubes (4mm high and 5mm diameter), three empty and one with a silver dome-headed rivet in situ. Description: Part of a very small partly gilded silver early Anglo-Saxon sword pommel cap of 'cocked hat' shape. Less than half survives, the fragment consisting of one shoulder and a little of both sides, with a pair of broken circular loops, originally to hold rivets, at the lower end of the shoulder. These spring from a rather low vertical end, only 3mm tall, which is gilded. The surviving shoulder is ungilded, and is decorated with a central engraved inverted Y shape, with the central stem running up towards the centre of the pommel. This has been rather badly made, with the righ…

A guard or component from the hilt of a Roman, or late Iron Age, sword or dagger of 1st century AD date. Part of the tang/blade junction survives within. The guard retains slight traces of niello lines on the edges and on the collar. The surviving tang measures 18.63mm x c8mm and the blade measures 36.17mm x 6.65mm.
An idea of how such hilt guards were used can be gained from the swords found at Cotterdale, Yorkshire (MacGregor 1976, no.143) and Hod Hill, Dorset (Manning 1985 149, V3), the latter probably being a Roman sword.

Anglo-Saxon silver-gilt sword-ring, late 6th century. Cast silver-gilt sword ring inlaid with niello. Each face is grooved and gilt, one side is beaded, the other is plain. Around the circumference a central gilt beaded band is flanked by a nielloed zigzag on one side and a row of nielloed triangles on the other. The ring shows signs of wear where it was originally attached to the sword hilt.
89 per cent silver
This ring would have been part of a fine early Anglo-Saxon sword hilt. Sword hilts with rings attached are known from a number of rich Kentish cemeteries and form a homog…

A copper-alloy sword or dagger pommel. The pommel is oval in cross-section and sub-rectangular in plan. The top is domed and has a rectangular slot for the tang of the blade. A moulded cresecent or 'beak' extends from the shoulder of the pommel on both narrow-sides. That these mouldings represent a beak is strengthened by the the presence of a small circular cell of what appears to be niello in the centre on both broad sides. These cells presumably represent the eye of the bird. The surface of the pommel is decorated on both sides with two incised lines running diagonally from top to …
