Complete late Medieval copper alloy purse hanger frame with niello inlay decoration. From the base of a narrow rectangular strap loop a semi-oval loop projects down and forwards curving back on itself towards the base of the strap loop from which it sprung. Just short of the return to the strap loop it bifurcates into two arms. One arm juts downwards in a short tapering projection to restrict the upper part of the semi-oval loop. The other arm continues the frame and turns abruptly to run upwards slightly obliquely to the plane of the loop. Just beyond the terminal end of the…

Cast copper alloy hooked strap fitting of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The fitting can be divided into two separate parts; the body and the hooked terminal. The body of the fitting is relatively flat with a sub-rectangular cross-section; whereas the hook is sub-triangular (D shaped). The hooked terminal has been formed by bending the upper part of the fitting back upon itself to form a U shaped hook. This hook is undecorated and tapers slightly along its length terminating in a broken edge. The upper part of the hook flares into the decorated body of the strap fitting. The…

A complete Post Medieval copper-alloy sword belt loop or strap slide dating c. AD 1500-1600. The fitting consists of a flat octofoil plate featuring a moulded interlaced rectilinear and curvilinear design around a central lozenge and central circular pellet. A circular knop surmounts the upper edge and from the back of this extends a bent arm that is rectangular in shape and in cross-section. The reverse of the plate is flat and undecorated. The surfaces have light-green patination with areas of light-brown around the edges. There are also the remains of black niello in the reces…

Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably a slider or mount. It consists of a strip of sheet copper alloy, indented at either end and folded over. The indentations are probably the remains of perforations that would been used for the attaching rivet. The belt or strap would have been located inside the resultant 'U' shaped bend. The fitting is decorated with two niello inlaid longitudinal incised lines that run the whole length of the object, and parallel with adjacent edges. Dates to between c1066 and c1500 AD. The length is 30mm, the width is 7mm, thickness 4mm, and the weigh…

Early Post Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting from a sword belt hanger. The plate is sub triangular in shape with a trifoliate terminal. The inner face is undecorated. The outer face has a finely executed raised foliate decoration within a beaded border. It has been inlaid with black niello. There are two rivet holes, both retaining remnant iron rivets. The artefact would have been one of three similar plates which would have hung from a mount with three suspension loops. Each plate would have had a forward facing hook. This particular one is missing about half the hook. See Read 200…

Late Saxon Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy strap distributor, domed and circular with three round holes and engraved decoration inlaid with white material, probably niello. The motif, a trefoil linked to circles around the apertures, is similar to that found on Borre-style disc brooches (e.g. Kershaw 2013, fig.3.7). The object was probably engaged with socketed hooks (see LIN-F29FC4). Other similar distributors from Norfolk include examples from Strumpshaw (HER 35019, NMS-A9CFC1) and Colkirk (HER 37128, NMS-7E8916). Diameter 27mm. Height / thickness 8mm.
