A complete copper alloy Stirrup-Strap Mount of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) date (AD 1000-1100). The object is sub-triangular in plan. The top of the mount is rounded and has a circular perforation within the centre of the upper projection. The plate is slightly concave to the front of the plate. The upper perforation is flanked by two knops around the edge of the stirrup-strap mount. From these knops the plate widens to a maximum width of 29.36mm which is marked by a second lower pair of rounded knops. Between the upper and lower knops the plate expands at a point which i…

Incomplete Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997 Class A, Type 1 with the apex loop missing (ancient break). There are two iron rivets in the lower fixing holes above the flange and remains of the iron fitting on the reverse. The front is engraved with a stylised zoomorphic arrangement that is very close to those of ibid. cat. nos. 58-60. All were probably from the same East Anglian source (ibid. 26). The engraving is inlaid with material, probably niello, that has mostly been lost. What survives is dull greenish brown. Extant height 41.3mm. Width 30.1mm. Weigh…

Cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, with decorative silver wire and niello inlay of Anglo-Scandinavian inspiration. The mount is very worn and the inlay only survives in patches. Below the apex rivet is a pendent lobe, while at the base a union knot probably links a pair of opposed spirals which are utilised by the pair of rivet holes. Centrally is a knot within a wide ribbon-like strip which may be the body of a snake-like beast whose head is otherwise worn away. A corroded iron rivet survives within the apex hole and obscures the decoration. One of the other i…

Incomplete and abraded Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount with the apex missing. There is no basal flange. Traces of rust lie behind one of the two lower fixing holes. From the basal corners the sides slope inwards to rounded lobes (one larger than the other). The top comprises two concavities flanking a broken stump. A late early-medieval stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A Type 10B. Made of cast copper alloy, it is sub-triangular in shape. It has a common right angle flange, with the corroded remains of two iron rivets in place. This corrosion has slightly affected the front of the mount. The apex loop is damaged and broken through. The mount is decorated by engraving and openwork and the pattern appears to be an interlaced zoomorphic design. It is worn, so the creature depicted is difficult to make out clearly. The openwork comprises two elongated kidney-shapes in the shoulders of the moun…
