An Early Medieval stirrup strap mount (Williams Class a, type 8) dating to the 11th century. A cast copper alloy, sub-triangular mount. It has three attachment holes, one set below the apex and the other two at the base, above the right-angle flange. The lower two holes retain the corroded traces of iron fixings. The apex is slightly truncated by an ancient break. The front is decorated with moulded zoomorphic elements and lobed tendrils. The details of the decoration are quite deeply cast and clear. At the apex is a zoomorphic head terminal with prominent eyes. There flows from the ape…

A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late Anglo-Saxon date (c. 11th century AD). The mount is sub-pentagonal in form, characteristic of a Williams Class A, Type 1 mount (1997, 26ff.; see fig. 19). It has a trefoil apex loop with small side knobs; its hole is notably large. From this the mount widens to its maximum width with a further pair of side knobs present. The mount then narrows to an incurved waist below which are a further pair of knobs above the straight base. Above the base are two circular perforations; neither rivet survives. On the reverse is a perpendicular rectang…

Cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, with decorative silver wire and niello inlay of Anglo-Scandinavian inspiration. The mount is very worn and the inlay only survives in patches. Below the apex rivet is a pendent lobe, while at the base a union knot probably links a pair of opposed spirals which are utilised by the pair of rivet holes. Centrally is a knot within a wide ribbon-like strip which may be the body of a snake-like beast whose head is otherwise worn away. A corroded iron rivet survives within the apex hole and obscures the decoration. One of the other i…

A copper alloy probable stirrup-strap mount dating from the 11th century. The bottom part of the mount is missing, and it is this end which has the defining features of a stirrup-strap mount, so it's identification is uncertain. It is a triangular object with a worn zoomorphic animal head terminal at the apex. There is a rivet hole beneath this, and then the plate is decorated with niello. The design is unclear; only a pointed oval outline is visible. The break at the bottom is patinated. The reverse is slightly concave but otherwise plain. There is a slight possibility that this is a…

A copper alloy stirrup mount in an Anglo-Scandinavian style, Williams Class A, type 5. It has a subtriangular shape with a drilled hole in the base and at the apex. Traces of niello remain on the surface, though the design is difficult to interpret due to the degree of corrosion, which extends accross the surface of the object. Traces of iron oxide are visible on the underside of the mount on the basal rib. This stirrup mount is probably a Class A Type 5, though David Williams describes a similar mount from Bedfordshire as unclassified but similar to a Type 5 and Type 1 (Late Sa…

A worn and corroded Early Medieval cast copper alloy stirrup mount, c. 1025-1100 AD. The mount has an overall symmetrical tongue shape. At one end it is square and bends away from the front face at 90 degrees to form a narrowed perpendicular flange (Type A Flange). On the front face progressing towards the other end of the mount the initial part is rectangular leading to symmetrical knops, one on either side. The rectangular segment has two equidistant circular holes placed across its width. From the knops the mount widens symmetrically in a scallop shape to two further knops, from wh…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval stirrup strap mount from the late 11th century. It is sub-triangular in shape. There is an integral loop at the top; at approximately the centre of the mount is a pair of off-centred lobes. The interior of the mount is decorated with four downward curving lines of indentations, which were most likely inlaid, now missing; the top three lines of indentations have three each, and the bottom line has four. There is some remaining red niello between the third and last line; this area appears to protrude from the mount, and may be a debased animal he…

Cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount with niello inlay, plate roughly triangular with curving sides which bear small projections suggesting Ringerike style fronds. The inlaid design is crude and appears to represent knot work motifs. There is a transverse step/ledge across base. Two rivet holes, containing traces of iron are present at the apex and base of the triangle. There are two further, unfinished holes either side of the base.Height 50.4mm, Width 34.4mm, Thickness 3.5mm, Mass 26.05g.

The decoration consists of a central triquetra with a longitudinal line extending from it to the apex, with curving lines either side of the top and bottom. Border of pair of lines with transverse lines. Trace of rivet hole, but upper part missing. Two iron rivets intact along the lower edge, with heavy corrosion on the upper surface. Cast copper-alloy stirrup strap-mount, Williams 1997, Type 8. Sub-triangular mount with a large zoomorphic head terminal at the apex and with smaller projecting heads on either side of the base. From the upper head with its prominent eyes, projects a series of looping and bifurcating tendrils which end in lobes. The lower heads have rounded snouts with flaring nostrils, long pointed eyes and large pointed ears. On each of these is the front part of the animals body together with a single limb. From each body a prominent wing extends upwards and inwards to terminate in a lobe. There is…
