A copper alloy probable stirrup-strap mount dating from the 11th century. The bottom part of the mount is missing, and it is this end which has the defining features of a stirrup-strap mount, so it's identification is uncertain. It is a triangular object with a worn zoomorphic animal head terminal at the apex. There is a rivet hole beneath this, and then the plate is decorated with niello. The design is unclear; only a pointed oval outline is visible. The break at the bottom is patinated. The reverse is slightly concave but otherwise plain. There is a slight possibility that this is a…

A worn and corroded Early Medieval cast copper alloy stirrup mount, c. 1025-1100 AD. The mount has an overall symmetrical tongue shape. At one end it is square and bends away from the front face at 90 degrees to form a narrowed perpendicular flange (Type A Flange). On the front face progressing towards the other end of the mount the initial part is rectangular leading to symmetrical knops, one on either side. The rectangular segment has two equidistant circular holes placed across its width. From the knops the mount widens symmetrically in a scallop shape to two further knops, from wh…

An Early Medieval to Medieval copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount belonging to Williams Class A. The incised pentagonal frame contains a faint intertwined beast above which is a pair of opposed spirals and a union knot. The mount has a lobed apex, three rivet holes and a stepped flange. There are traces of inlaid niello on all the incised lines. The mount is similar to Williams Class A, Type 15 (also see no. 503 in Williams 1997).

An incomplete copper-alloy early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) stirrup-strap mount. It is roughly pentagonal in shape with a straight base, straight lower sides and the sides of the upper end tapering inwards. Small rounded lobes project from the centre of either side of the inwards tapering upper end. The outer part of the upper end projects slightly, its outer face raised and decorated with transverse moulding creating a zoomorphic effect. Its tip, which is typically pierced with a small hole, is missing. The outer face of the main body of the mount is decorated with two concentric in…

A Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams' Class C, Group 1 (1997, 100). Sub-triangular, the lower side edges are straight, with three lobes decreasing in size towards the apex on each upper edge and a straight base. It is broken across the apex loop and one corner is missing, broken across one of the fixing holes. There is an additional piercing below the apex loop, and a small hole has been added next to the lower broken edge to allow the mount to be secured after it was damaged. There is no trace of a flange along the base, but one worn and angled side lug survives.…

Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount. There is no flange. Perforation at the apex the upper edge of which is scalloped. The face is decorated with a ribbon-like beast, perhaps a dragon, inlaid with niello which now stands proud of the decayed surface. There are two copper alloy rivets at the base which secure a corroded iron bar to the reverse of the mount. Width 36mm. Height 42.5mm. Unclassified in Williams 1997, very close to ibid. no. 497. 11th century.

Incomplete and abraded Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount with the apex missing. There is no basal flange. Traces of rust lie behind one of the two lower fixing holes. Inlaid off-white material, presumably niello, stands proud of the surface. A crude whiskered animal mask within a frame is depicted. From the basal corners the sides slope inwards to rounded lobes (one larger than the other). The top comprises two concavities flanking a broken stump. The form is slightly reminiscent of William 1997 Class A, Type 5 and of a Class C, Group 2 mount from Buxton-with-Lammas, Norfolk…

There are two iron rivets in the lower fixing holes above the flange and remains of the iron fitting on the reverse. The front is engraved with a stylised zoomorphic arrangement that is very close to those of ibid. cat. nos. 58-60. All were probably from the same East Anglian source (ibid. 26). The engraving is inlaid with material, probably niello, that has mostly been lost. What survives is dull greenish brown. Extant height 41.3mm. Width 30.1mm. Weigh…

A copper alloy stirrup mount in an Anglo-Scandinavian style, Williams Class A, type 5. It has a subtriangular shape with a drilled hole in the base and at the apex. Traces of niello remain on the surface, though the design is difficult to interpret due to the degree of corrosion, which extends accross the surface of the object. Traces of iron oxide are visible on the underside of the mount on the basal rib. This stirrup mount is probably a Class A Type 5, though David Williams describes a similar mount from Bedfordshire as unclassified but similar to a Type 5 and Type 1 (Late Sa…

An incomplete cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount dating to the late early-medieval (AD850-1100) Anglo-Scandinavian period. It is a strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 8 (or possibly Type 7), with Williams' cloest parallel being no. 158 (Williams 1997, 50). It is roughly triangular in shape with a projecting ledge at the bottom on the reverse. There are three rivet holes: one in each corner. The reverse is plain, but there a decoration with niello inlay on the obverse: a double-circular with cental circlets and radiating lines resembling a windmill. Williams comments that this pat…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval stirrup strap mount from the late 11th century. It is sub-triangular in shape. There is an integral loop at the top; at approximately the centre of the mount is a pair of off-centred lobes. The interior of the mount is decorated with four downward curving lines of indentations, which were most likely inlaid, now missing; the top three lines of indentations have three each, and the bottom line has four. An incomplete Late Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian)-Medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (c. 1000-c. 1100 AD). Williams Class A, Type 5. The handle-like projection and the suspension loop are missing due to an old transverse break and part of the flange is missing. The complete stirrup mount would have consisted of a pentagonal, flat frame or body, set within a pair of tendril like shapes, down each diagonal side, which terminated in scrolls. Extending from the apex would have been a long, handle like extension, which would have probably terminated in a zoomorphic head t…
