Cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount with niello inlay, plate roughly triangular with curving sides which bear small projections suggesting Ringerike style fronds. The inlaid design is crude and appears to represent knot work motifs. There is a transverse step/ledge across base. There are two further, unfinished holes either side of the base.Height 50.4mm, Width 34.4mm, Thickness 3.5mm, Mass 26.05g.

The decoration consists of a central triquetra with a longitudinal line extending from it to the apex, with curving lines either side of the top and bottom. Border of pair of lines with transverse lines. Trace of rivet hole, but upper part missing. Two iron rivets intact along the lower edge, with heavy corrosion on the upper surface. From the upper head with its prominent eyes, projects a series of looping and bifurcating tendrils which end in lobes. The lower heads have rounded snouts with flaring nostrils, long pointed eyes and large pointed ears. On each of these is the front part of the animals body together with a single limb. From each body a prominent wing extends upwards and inwards to terminate in a lobe. There is…

Cast copper alloy stirrup mount of Williams' Class A, Type 1, broadly pentagonal in shape. There are three knops on each side of the mount. The apex loop is missing from the top of the mount above the uppermost two of the knops. The upper surface is smooth and decorated with an abstract asymmetric incised linear design of a single knotted beast with traces of silver wire inlaid in the design. The remains of a single rivet hole is evident in the centre of the mount between the two uppermost knops. Two further rivet holes are located at the bottom of the mount, one on each side, both re…

A late early-medieval stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A Type 10B. Made of cast copper alloy, it is sub-triangular in shape. It has a common right angle flange, with the corroded remains of two iron rivets in place. This corrosion has slightly affected the front of the mount. The apex loop is damaged and broken through. The mount is decorated by engraving and openwork and the pattern appears to be an interlaced zoomorphic design. It is worn, so the creature depicted is difficult to make out clearly. The openwork comprises two elongated kidney-shapes in the shoulders of the moun…

Early Medieval (11th Century) copper alloy stirrup strap mount. It is part of a Class A Type 8 subtriangular mount; the top half is broken and missing. The mount has a right-angled flange that projects like a tab rather than extending across the full width of the base. It is decorated with two beasts. One up each side of the mount, the bodies partly project thus shaping the edge of the mount. The heads of the beasts project beyond each corner of the base. Between the beasts' heads there are the two perforations for attachment. The heads have rounded snouts with flaring nostrils, long …

A copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams' Class A, Type 10a (Williams 1997 p 53). The pear-shaped mount of 11th century date is extensively decorated in the Urnes style in niello with silver wire inlay. The ornament depicts a curling serpent-like beast whose head with pointed oval eyes forms the apex of the mount. The body bifurcates at a spiral hip joint; the body continues in a series of loops and appears to terminate in a scroll to the left of the hip. The other limb appears to end in a foot at the bottom left-hand corner, but this detail is unclear. Possibly two secondary sn…

An Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) copper alloy stirrup strap mount (11th century). The stirrup strap mount is a Class A, sub-triangular mount, debased Type 8 (Williams 1997: 47). The flange does not extend along the entire length of the base, just between the two heads. A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late Anglo-Saxon date (c. 11th century AD). The mount is sub-pentagonal in form, characteristic of a Williams Class A, Type 1 mount (1997, 26ff.; see fig. 19). It has a trefoil apex loop with small side knobs; its hole is notably large. From this the mount widens to its maximum width with a further pair of side knobs present. The mount then narrows to an incurved waist below which are a further pair of knobs above the straight base. Above the base are two circular perforations; neither rivet survives. On the reverse is a perpendicular rectang…

Cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, with decorative silver wire and niello inlay of Anglo-Scandinavian inspiration. The mount is very worn and the inlay only survives in patches. Below the apex rivet is a pendent lobe, while at the base a union knot probably links a pair of opposed spirals which are utilised by the pair of rivet holes. Centrally is a knot within a wide ribbon-like strip which may be the body of a snake-like beast whose head is otherwise worn away. A corroded iron rivet survives within the apex hole and obscures the decoration. One of the other i…

A copper alloy probable stirrup-strap mount dating from the 11th century. The bottom part of the mount is missing, and it is this end which has the defining features of a stirrup-strap mount, so it's identification is uncertain. It is a triangular object with a worn zoomorphic animal head terminal at the apex. There is a rivet hole beneath this, and then the plate is decorated with niello. The design is unclear; only a pointed oval outline is visible. The break at the bottom is patinated. The reverse is slightly concave but otherwise plain. There is a slight possibility that this is a…

A Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams' Class C, Group 1 (1997, 100). Sub-triangular, the lower side edges are straight, with three lobes decreasing in size towards the apex on each upper edge and a straight base. It is broken across the apex loop and one corner is missing, broken across one of the fixing holes. There is an additional piercing below the apex loop, and a small hole has been added next to the lower broken edge to allow the mount to be secured after it was damaged. There is no trace of a flange along the base, but one worn and angled side lug survives.…

A copper alloy stirrup mount in an Anglo-Scandinavian style, Williams Class A, type 5. It has a subtriangular shape with a drilled hole in the base and at the apex. Traces of niello remain on the surface, though the design is difficult to interpret due to the degree of corrosion, which extends accross the surface of the object. Traces of iron oxide are visible on the underside of the mount on the basal rib. This stirrup mount is probably a Class A Type 5, though David Williams describes a similar mount from Bedfordshire as unclassified but similar to a Type 5 and Type 1 (Late Sa…

A worn and corroded Early Medieval cast copper alloy stirrup mount, c. 1025-1100 AD. The mount has an overall symmetrical tongue shape. At one end it is square and bends away from the front face at 90 degrees to form a narrowed perpendicular flange (Type A Flange). On the front face progressing towards the other end of the mount the initial part is rectangular leading to symmetrical knops, one on either side. The rectangular segment has two equidistant circular holes placed across its width. From the knops the mount widens symmetrically in a scallop shape to two further knops, from wh…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval stirrup strap mount from the late 11th century. It is sub-triangular in shape. There is an integral loop at the top; at approximately the centre of the mount is a pair of off-centred lobes. The interior of the mount is decorated with four downward curving lines of indentations, which were most likely inlaid, now missing; the top three lines of indentations have three each, and the bottom line has four. There is some remaining red niello between the third and last line; this area appears to protrude from the mount, and may be a debased animal he…

An incomplete Late Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian)-Medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (c. 1000-c. 1100 AD). Williams Class A, Type 5. The handle-like projection and the suspension loop are missing due to an old transverse break and part of the flange is missing. The complete stirrup mount would have consisted of a pentagonal, flat frame or body, set within a pair of tendril like shapes, down each diagonal side, which terminated in scrolls. Extending from the apex would have been a long, handle like extension, which would have probably terminated in a zoomorphic head t…
