Copper alloy possible buckle fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A tapering cast curving oval section bar, presumably taken as part of the loop of a large decorated buckle. One end is collared, with a continuation apparently lost to a ragged break. The surface bears incised comma-shaped grooves, larger [length 6mm] and smaller [length 2.5mm] accompanied by finer feathered groups of incised strokes. The larger cuts may have been apt to receive niello or silver inlay, though none remains. The surface decoration encourages the finder to suggest an early medieval, Anglo-Saxon, da…

An early Anglo-Saxon copper alloy buckle. The frame is D-shaped in plan and and in section, with the flat edge forming the underside. The lip is decorated with a pair of transverse grooves on either shoulder, and further grooves either side of a shallow rest for the pin terminal. The buckle is worn, but both shoulders appear to terminate with an animal head that bites or rests on the pin bar. One of these heads has a small pellet of silver, which perhaps originally represented the eye of the beast. The pin survives; this has transverse grooves on the top, and a downturned terminal.

It consists of two parallel lines with a series of evenly spaced perpendicular lines creating a band of squares; each square has a diagonal zigzag line of two steps running from top left to bottom right. All of this decoration is recessed and filled with niello. The top half consists of two panels; each co…

Copper alloy fragment, probably the outside edge of one loop of a Late Medieval double loop rectangular buckle. The remaining bar is concave, probably due to bending. The bar is oval in section with four evenly spaced, deeply indented, diagonal grooves running across the front and outer side and parallel shallow diagonal incised lines running across the raised sections. Traces of niello remaining in the shallower lines. Only short sections of the top and bottom sides of the buckjle remain at either end of the bar. An incomplete Medieval (1350 - 1450) copper alloy strap-end 'buckle' consisting of a damaged socket and a fragment of probable "lyre-shaped" openwork frame only. Traces of silvering or perhaps niello are visible in the grooved decoration of the socket end. The object measures 34.91x31.60x4.85mm and weighs 13.40g. On the front of the socket is asymmetrical cast-and-grooved decoration, perhaps representing a scene although it is not possible to determine exactly what it is. The reverse is probably almost intact - the remains of two iron rivets are apparent to the reverse (which is plai…

Description: An unusual complete silver buckle with Trewhiddle-style decoration made from five different components all of which appear to be made from the same metal. It has an elongated D-shaped frame, with a sub-rectangular cross-section decorated with four bands of short transverse grooves on the upper face; there is also a grooved pin rest in the centre of the outer edge. The terminals of the frame are flattened ovals with circular holes through them, through which a silver cylindrical bar runs. An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of 9th-century date. It is made from a single thin sheet of copper alloy, which tapers from a wider to a narrower end. Both ends are incomplete. At the wider end there are two sub-rectangular projections with a rectilinear slot in between; this may be the remains of two hinge loops to attach the plate to a frame. At the other end are two incomplete circular rivet holes. Between the rivet holes is an engraved sub-triangular shape, two sides concave and the other convex, which may be related to the 'fan-shaped' motifs found on 9th-century strap-en…
