Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible strap end. Cast trapezoid plate with traces of interlace decoration and a single drilled attachment hole, tapered towards an expanded terminal bearing a Borre style beast mask with ‘teddy bear’ ears and peloidal eyes, the latter with a curved moulding separating it from a bifurcated projecting element, now broken, and with sparse traces of niello inlay on the display side. A triangular frame set flush with the otherwise plain back of the object now retains traces of rust. The object relates to strap ends of Thomas Class B in its decoration though the f…

Copper alloy strap end. Cast zoomorphic strap end with a beast head terminal and a split inner end [one leaf of which is lost, probably recently] with paired stitching holes, Thomas Class A Type 1. A central bordered panel bears an interlaced design depicting a ?hound with long hare-like ears with its forepaw resting in front of the erect head. The body is spotted with stamped pits. The further extent of the body turns behind the head with a lower limb uppermost to the left of the panel [i.e. towards the terminal]. The creature is at all events mammalian rather than reptilian. A possib…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible buckle fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A tapering cast curving oval section bar, presumably taken as part of the loop of a large decorated buckle. One end is collared, with a continuation apparently lost to a ragged break. The surface bears incised comma-shaped grooves, larger [length 6mm] and smaller [length 2.5mm] accompanied by finer feathered groups of incised strokes. The larger cuts may have been apt to receive niello or silver inlay, though none remains. The surface decoration encourages the finder to suggest an early medieval, Anglo-Saxon, da…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible harness pendant fragment. A cast bilaterally decorated heater shield-shaped plate with the same design on both sides: a black [sable] field with a neat and closely-spaced cross-hatched grid pattern or fretty. The object presumably formed part of an elaborate set of harness garniture (cf. Ashley 2002, fig. 23), and may well have been mounted at one side to remain visible from both. The edges are entirely abraded, which has obliterated any evidence for attachment. This reveals metal of a grey tint perhaps arising from tin in the metal mix. The strong tint of the bl…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Silver unidentified object. Fragment of a cast round section rod with two or more circumferentially incised bands of width 0.5mm which may retain inlay traces. Both ends are indented by up to 0.7mm, and there is a deep gouge in one side. The black surface and density may suggest this to be a fragment from a bead-like object made of silver, though the object lacks a stringing hole. The decorative inlay of silver objects is characteristic of the Middle Saxon period, though the condition of this fragment vitiates further comment. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850. Copper alloy strap end. Long cast strap end with a bifurcated belt end with paired drilled holes of diameter 2.4mm, and a beast head terminal, too elongated to meet criteria for Thomas Class A, though cf. his Class A Type 5 with silver wire inlay. Decoration comprises a contoured terminal with four paired comma-shaped figures in moulded relief behind the head and possibly representing the pelt of a beast, with a long straight-sided panel of interlace with black inlay forming a reticulate pattern occupying most of the remaining surface, with a broad paired line border to either side of…

Copper alloy strap end. Cast strap end of elongated oval form with its broader end split and the other bearing a knop or terminal derived from a beast head, Thomas Class A Type 2. The field afforded by the display face bears a dense complex of incised floral palmate motifs, usually trilobate, with several thin coils of black material, possibly niello, as relicts of a formerly more extensive scheme of inlaid decoration, and with a curl or spiral motif at the broad end. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-850.

Copper alloy and silver
Strap End. Cast zoomorphic Trewhiddle style strap end with a split end meeting the belt; a silver flat-headed rivet occupies one of the pair of fastening holes at this end. Decoration comprises (described from the terminal) a cast beast snout with nostrils at its end and eyes suggested by narrowing conferring a reptilian aspect; a collar with central groove and a dot either side of it; and an elongated panel of interlace. A second short panel of interlace with rounded end includes the rivet. The surface is black and shiny, and may suggest silvering or niello…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Unidentified item of jewellery of early Anglo-Saxon date. The object is a melted fragment of silver, with both faces having the wrinkled surface resulting from the melting and congealing of metal. On one face a scrap of decorative detail survives; a strip 2mm wide decorated with two rows of punched triangles set apex-inward and one above the other, to give an impression of a reserved zig-zag in between. The triangles are filled with a dark grey or black material which is probably niello, and the strip appears to be flanked by slightly raised metal.
The fragment measures 18.8mm long …

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy with inlay mount. Cast flat-backed lobed or elongated quatrefoil mount with a rivet hole of diameter 2mm at either end, and filled rivet holes in lobes at either side. The lobes are bordered by convergent lines of grey coloured inlay; the finder suggests these may be enamel, but they may equally represent silver strips. The dull brown finish of the object is a common feature of Viking Age metalwork from the area, and the finder suggests an 11th-century date, which appears apt. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1100.
