A near complete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are complete with flat and pierced end cap. The axis bar, spring and pin are all lost; the spring would have been secured by an external chord which was fixed to a rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. "Originally thought to have been parts of the same object, close inspection and analysis has shown that these two fragments come from two separate strap-ends. Each fragment is 25 mm in length, but the mid-section fragment has a silver content of approximately 97 per cent, while the endsection's silver content is approximately 93 per cent. Both are decorated in the Trewhiddle style; the midsection has six panels of plant and animal motifs, while the end section appears to have had a single panel with animal and interlace decoration, and terminates in a round-eared animal head with prom…

Description: Silver strap-end of Thomas's Class A, type 1, originally decorated in Trewhiddle style, but later re-worked to depict a human figure, perhaps imitating a 'Heiligenfibel' or 'Saint' brooch.
The original strap-end is extremely well made. It has a split attachment end, although the two halves are now pressed closely together with no gap in between and indeed appear never to have been apart. The attachment end is shaped around two very small rivet holes, c. 0.8mm in diameter, with a tiny point in between. A fan- or pelta-shaped motif below this has a central drop-shaped fi…

This is a medieval (circa late 13th century) silver gilt, annular brooch. This example is also decorated with a niello inlay. Niello is a black inlay composed of sulphides of silver and copper, used in the medieval period to distinguish incised decoration on silver and gold. The brooch has a wide flat dished form with a slightly convex upper surface, that surface is then decorated with a series of 18 rows of punched 'dots' separated by chip carved grooves, each set on an angle to the radial, forming a 'swirl' decoration. The grooves were filled with the niello and the whole surface wa…
