An incomplete copper alloy purse bar with a central boss that is square in profile but more ovoid in plan with convex faces and straight sides which narrow to the arms. One face of the boss is decorated with niello cross-hatching and the other face has radiating lines in the form of a star. The boss has been drilled and fitted with a swivelling suspension loop that would have been circular in profile but is now broken, showing the arms are hemispherical in section. The boss tapers to zoomorphic heads on either side which look like beasts gripping the extended side arms in their mouths…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall

Cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, with decorative silver wire and niello inlay of Anglo-Scandinavian inspiration. The mount is very worn and the inlay only survives in patches. Below the apex rivet is a pendent lobe, while at the base a union knot probably links a pair of opposed spirals which are utilised by the pair of rivet holes. Centrally is a knot within a wide ribbon-like strip which may be the body of a snake-like beast whose head is otherwise worn away. A corroded iron rivet survives within the apex hole and obscures the decoration. One of the other i…
