A fragment of a Post Medieval vessel dating from AD1500 - AD1700. The sherd has been wheelthrown and has a black fabric. The inner surface has been treated with a mid brown mottled slip. The outer surface is very pitted and abraded. The fragment is a body sherd and is therefore undiagnostic. It is also unclear what type of vessel the sherd came from. The sherd measures 28.45mm in height, 30.92mm in width, 6.28mm in thickness and weighs 6.66g.

A fragment of a probably Medieval vessel dating from AD1100 - AD1500. The sherd has been wheelthrown and has a mid orange fabric with a black, unoxidised core. The inner surface has been treated with a brown slip whilst the slip on the outer surface is black. Along one edge is a strip of yellow slip measuring 10.67mm in width. The fragment is a body sherd and is therefore undiagnostic. It is also unclear what type of vessel the sherd came from. The sherd measures 30.82mm in height, 48.58mm in width, 6.14mm in thickness and weighs 11.00g.

A ceramic base sherd, probably from an Oxfordshire red/brown-slipped ware bowl, dating from the mid 3rd to late 4th century AD.
Part of the footring survives on the underside of the vessel, the sides of which curve upwards. The fabric is pale orange throughout and has flecks of black and red temper material, as well as one large red inclusion. Traces of a brown or red slip are visible on the outer surface.

The everted rim is beaded, protruding a short distance from the wall of the vessel. The fabric is bright orange throughout and has occasional black and red flecks. Traces of a red slip are visible on the outer surface.

A body sherd from an Oxfordshire red-slipped ware flanged bowl, dating from the mid 3rd to late 4th century AD.
The sherd is smooth-surfaced, displays marks from the wheel-throwing process and gradually tapers towards the top. Part of the downward-curving flange projects outwards from the outer surface of the vessel. The core of the fabric is mid grey and displays occasional chalk inclusions, whereas the surfaces are orange. Traces of a red slip can be seen on the outer surface, particularly around the flange.

A base sherd from a Roman Central Gaulish samian bowl, probably of form Dr 18 or 18/31, and dating from the mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD.
Part of the base ring survives on the underside of the flat-bottomed vessel. The fabric is light orange and the slip is dark reddish-brown. The edges of the sherd are abraded.

The fabric of the irregular sherd is sandy, mid grey and has a smooth outer surface bearing bowed lines of black slip decoration. The inner surface is rilled, indicating the pot was thrown on a wheel.

A base sherd from a colour-coated Roman pottery vessel, probably of Nene Valley or Oxford Parchment ware.
The lower portion of the vessel's side is near vertical, angling inwards slightly, towards the top. Above this, the sides flare outwards. A small portion of the flat base survives. The fabric has a light grey core, pinkish-white surfaces and is granular, with dark inclusions. The outer surface retains traces of a dark brown slip.

A rim sherd from Roman Nene Valley colour-coated vessel.
The rim of the vessel does not project outwards, instead terminating in a rounded top edge. The form of this rim suggests it comes from a beaker. The fabric is light pinkish-yellow and the slip, which covers both surfaces, is dark greyish-brown.

Two abraded body sherds from Roman Nene Valley colour-coated vessels.
The smaller sherd has a deeply rilled inner surface. The inner part of its fabric is light grey, the outer area pinkish-white, and both surfaces have been coated with a black slip. The other sherd has a similar pinkish-white fabric and also contains occasional medium to large pieces of a red temper material. Both of its surfaces have been coated with a dark brown slip, but on the inner surface there is also an area which is unslipped.
Total weight of assemblage: 23.84g.

The irregular sherd originates from a vessel of uncertain type. At one end there is a sharp change in the direction, suggesting the sherd may be from the base or neck of the vessel. The fabric is mid reddish-brown, with a dark brown slip on both surfaces and a line of rouletted decoration on the outer surface.

One base sherd (with damaged foot-ring) of Roman Samian ware. The base fragment measures 35.41x28.90x5.59mm, while the foot ring measures 33.58mm in diameter and is 11.19mm tall. Thus the dimensions of the fragment are 35.41x33.58x16.78mm. It weighs 12.83g. On the inside surface of the base is a rectangular stamp with IXI in relief.
Samian ware was exported from Gaul during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Brenda Dickinson comments "the base is likely to be from a South Gaulish form 27g cup. The IXI stamp is anepigraphic (without a legend) but there is another example of it from the Bin…

A fragment of a samian ware possibly from a plate and dating to the period c. AD 70 to 260.
The sherd is orange in colour and displays the dark, shiney slip that is characteristic of this type of pottery. This fragment is the base sherd which has a bead edge which raises the base of the vessel away from the table surface. The inside of the base is flat with little evidence for damage to the slip.
