The sherd has a plain, almost upright rim, with an internal quarter-round moulding at the junction of the wall and the floor (the floor musing). The surface has been damaged in places, clearly marked where the slip is missing and the lighter fabric is revealed beneath. This vessel is pre-Flavian and was probably made in Central Gaul at Les Martres-de-Veyre (Webster: 1996: 30, ref: 15/17A). This type of vessel occurred throughout the 1st century, but declined in popularity in the Flavian peri…

A Samian Ware rim sherd of Roman date (c. AD 100-150). The thin-walled sherd is irregular in plan and has five sides, including the rim which is beaded. It is attributed to the Central Gaulish workshops of the first half of the 2nd century AD. There is a dark reddish orange slip on both the internal and external surface which is poorly preserved. This sherd can probably be classified as a Dragendorff form 18/31R (Webster 1996, 32-33). However, due to the small percentage of the surviving sherd, it is possible that the sherd may be a Dragendorff form 18, in which case, it would be…

Roman pottery vessel base sherd. The frabric is a pale orange, with both the inner and outer surfaces being covered in a black slip. The base of the vessel has a diameter of 30.07mm, the surviving section of body wall is 4.25mm thick. It weighs 16.56 grams. Dr Paul Sealey (Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service) comments: The fabric could well be Colchester ware, in which case it should date c. AD 125-250. Scratched on the exterior of the base are a few symbols. They are not apparently writing (letters) but some sort of anepigraphic doodle.

A rim sherd from a samian pottery bowl, probably of form 37 or 38 (see Webster, 1996, p. 47-51). The nature of the fabric (see below) suggests an East Gaulish origin. Such bowls were produced between c. 70AD and the mid 3rd century. The rim projects slightly from the edge of the bowl and the side extends downwards at a steep angle, increasing in thickness towards the bottom. The fabric is light pinkish-orange in section and has a deep reddish-brown slip. The sherd is slightly abraded. It measures 43.1mm high, 39.5mm wide and 7.8mm thick. The weight is 10.68g.

Undecorated sherd of Samian type Roman pottery probably dating to the 2nd century AD (120 - 220 AD). The sherd consists of a small foot and fragment of side wall. The slip / glaze is relatively thick and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherds have been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal the buff orange brown coloured fabric beneath. This type of fabric and glaze is best compared to tha…
