The incomplete head of an Early Medieval gilded copper alloy disc-headed pin, dating to c. AD 570 - 620. Description: The disc is flat and approximately circular, due to more than half of the original circumference missing. It has an outer raised border (it is along this that the missing part of the edge has broken away) and is pierced by two small circular holes. These holes are pproximately 1 mm in diameter and placed 3 mm apart, adjacent to and perpendicular to the border. Copper alloy probable buckle plate fragment. A trapezoid sheet metal fragment, straight-sided, with a large [diameter 4.5mm] if slightly ragged hole at its broader end, where it is broken. This hole may be the end of a slot or hole for the putative buckle pin and is larger than a rivet-hole. Two rivets of diameter 3mm pass through the plate on either side of this hole. Copper alloy buckle. Cast sub-rectangular frame of rounded to lentoid section with a rounded slightly expanded and thinned outer edge and a strap bar set back from the frame. A cast and collared pin is looped round the strap bar; its mid-part is crazed and corroded. The frame bears extensive traces of a thick black coating resembling a stove enamel while the pin bears white metal plating. A series of semi-circular stamps, each arc enclosing a dot and so resembling halved ring-and-dot, passes along the outer borders of the central stalk, follows the edges of the troughs on either side, and ascends the inner side of the outer elements. A fragment from the trapezoid end of an object which appears to have incorporated a central floral openwork boss, across which it is broken, the boss being flanked by a slight – and perhaps broken – continuation on either side. A distinctive pattern of decoration comprises finely incised lines defining petals, and a crowded ground of tiny stamped circles which are also carried round the edges to form a border, with extensive gilding across the display side.
