A possible silver plated copper alloy contemporary copy of a hammered silver coin dating from the Post Medieval period: a halfcrown of Charles II (AD 1660-1685) struck between 1660 and 1662. The surface layer of silver is flaking; though the core of the coin is not definitely copper alloy, this is a possibility. It has a crown mintmark; mark of value XXX behind bust, and inner circles. See North number 2761. It is 33.8mm in diameter and 1.7mm thick, and weighs 12.19g.

Base metal contemporary counterfeit of a Charles II half crown (AD1660-1685). Obverse has laureate and draped bust facing right (third bust) with the legend CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA. The reverse has been worn smooth and is illegible. The patina and apparent lamination of the object suggests a possible copper alloy base that has been tinned or silvered. Diameter: 32.56mm; weight: 9.2g

A worn silver plated copper alloy half crown of Charles II (AD 1660-1685), a contemporary copy of a coin issued between AD 1660-1662 (hammered coinage). Even as a copy the coin is small for a halfcrown (at 32mm diameter rather than c. 34mm), however it is the right size of a milled halfcrown, issued after 1662. The features on the coin suggest that this is copying the earlier halfcrown (see Spink 2008 no. 3313 and 3321). c.f. North N2761.
