A possible knife guard. It is moulded in copper alloy and is basically a sub rectangular shape. In the centre is a rectangular hole through which the blade of a small knife would have passed through. At either end the shape narrows to form the muzzles of a zoomorphic design. From the snout, two shallow circular lines extend toward the hole, but at the snout this deepens, making the centre section raised above the outer, emphasising the snouts. The eyes are located inside these circular shapes and there are dots for the nostrils and a triangular shape at the top of the head, f…

A complete enamelled copper alloy Roman knife or razor handle. It is a elongated, slightly curved rectangular shape, also rectangular in cross-section, with a zoomorphic terminal at its outer end and break at its inner end where the iron bade would have been secured originally. Both faces have a central shallow rectangular recess, slightly curved to follow the shape of the object, each c.23mm long and c.7.5mm wide, with a raised wavy line longitudinally down its centre. Both recesses are filled with a yellowish enamel with tiny fragments of red in places. The outer terminal is slightl…

Copper alloy and iron probable knife. Cast copper alloy object with a shank of rounded section separating expanded ends. One takes the form of an oval face with lentoid eyes with blue enamel insets, and the other is a hand with four fingers on one side and the thumb on the other, with ferrous material possibly adhering. Ferrous material at one end might point to an identification as a knife handle, in which case the conceit may be of the modelled hand grasping the protruding blade [now lost], imitating the grasp of the user.
The upper edge of the face is formed by strongly defined …

Probably a Roman knife handle or part of a Roman knife handle, made from cast copper alloy, possibly dating from the 1st-2nd century AD. The handle is in two fragments which join at the bag. There would have been an organic or ferrous component between the two halves, possibly the tang of the knife. The tang and blade are now missing. There does not seem to be a pommel or knife cap. The two parts of the handle are convex or possibly angular: they have made up a hexagonal handle. Their inside is plain and the outside is covered in very small moulded cells, which are either square (alon…

A cast copper alloy knife handle, trapezoidal in plan with straight edges and convex sides. It is decorated with symmetrical moulded foliate decoration, inlaid with coloured enamel in white, blue and black, which became popular during the 17th century AD. The top knob is either figurative or possibly zoomorphic and is typical of the Georgian, post medieval period. A very similar handle can be seen at KENT4694. The knife handle is in poor condition as it is broken at the junction with the implement, with verdigris and remnants of the enamel decoration still in place.

Post-medieval copper alloy knife handle cast in two halves and containing the remains of an iron whittle tang. The upper half of a female figure playing a rummel pot is depicted in the round, above a tapering lower part covered in foliate decoration inlaid with enamel, both white another colour that is now pale green .There is no visible solder in the join between the two cast pieces and Read (2001, 82, no. 637) suggests brazing was used to secure a broadly comparable object. In several places decaying iron can be seen along the join. See SUR-742887 for a note by Geoff Egan on knife h…

An incomplete, copper alloy knife handle of Roman date (AD 43-250). The object is composed of a cylinder of copper alloy with an iron core. The outer, copper alloy surface is decorated with nine circumferentially running ridges, below which are two rows of lozenge shaped cells filled with blue and red enamel. There are two sub-rectangular spurs, composed of iron, projecting along one side.
The upper portion is missing due to an old break.
The object is Romano-British and possibly dates to the first or second century AD.

Post-medieval copper alloy handle filled remains of an iron tang and cast in two pieces. The figure of the upper part of a male figure wearing a hat and playing a bagpipe surmounts a tapering length decorated on both broad convex faces with foliar ornament inlaid with white and black enamel (much of which has been lost). There is no visible solder in the join between the two cast pieces and Read (2001, 82, no. 637) suggests brazing was used to secure a broadly comparable object. A post-medieval copper-alloy knife handle, dating to the 17th century. The handle is cast in two separate pieces, soldered down the middle so that it is hollow. Part of the iron whittle tang is still visible inside the hollow of the handle. The handle is rectangular and tapers to the blade end. There is a zoomorphic terminal that appears to be in the form of a lion's head (or some fantastical beast). The handle has recesses which form an enamelled decoration in foliate designs running down the widest sides, which are slightly curved. The enamel is no longer present, but traces remain …

A post medieval copper alloy socketed handle of a whittle tang knife decorated in the style of "Stuart" enamels and dating from AD 1640 - 1680. The knife handle is made in two pieces which are soldered together, leaving a hollow cavity for the iron knife tang, of which only corroded traces survive. The handle is of sub-rectangular section and widens at the terminal end where there are four moulded round apertures. The handle then tapers to a knopped terminal. The broad sides are decorated with symmetrical moulded foliate and floriate decoration inlaid with enamel. White enamel and blu…

Post-medieval copper alloy whittle tang knife handle in the form of classical female figure, a bust and naked torso with truncated arms on a tapering rectangular-sectioned pillar, in the manner of a Greek herm. A casting seam running the full length of both sides shows the use of two-piece mould. Wear has obsured some surface detail, especially of the face, which is now almost feaureless. The hollow socket is entirely filled with the the iron tang. An example from Derbyshire (LVPL-6EB2D4) is extremely similar, though its socket is very much longer.

Fragment of a Roman enamelled copper alloy terminal, possibly from a knife. The terminal is cylindrical and expands to a bulbous head. The base of the terminal has a hexagonal collar, around which is iron corrosion. The cylindrical part is decorated with eight triangular cells containing enamel, arranged sequentially pointing upwards and downwards. The enamel is degraded and is now a brown-red colour. The bulbous head is also decorated with eight enamelled triangular cells arranged in a similar manner.

A cast copper-alloy (probably brass) post-medieval socketed handle of a whittle-tang knife or other tool (17th century AD). The handle was cast in two pieces, then soldered together, and is therefore entirely hollow. The main part of the handle is trapezoidal in plan with straight edges and convex sides (L. 52.85mm). It therefore has a sub-rectangular cross-section. The object narrows in width (16.75 to 12.4mm) and thickness (12.0 to 7.15mm) towards the blade end, the blade itself now missing. At the other end an integral elaborate zoomorphic terminal is divided from the main part by …

Copper alloy, Iron and (possibly) enamel, knife end stop, as kindly identified by Glen Lister. Cast flat-ended cylinder, bearing possibly enamelled inlay of two panels, each comprising a single line border and a saltire. The putative inlay appears green, while the rest of the object is dark brown. A further green patch on one end, presumably the top, may represent further decoration, possibly in the shape of an eight-pointed star. Rust spots on opposite sides may show the expansion of a corroding iron core sheathed in copper alloy; the base is dark and possibly exposed iron. Suggested…

A post-Medieval copper-alloy knife end-cap in the form of a horse's hoof. The top end depicts a shoe with six incuse nails and downturned calkins. Traces of red enamel are in the three left-hand nail holes and traces of white in the three on the right. This may well suggest a owner's heraldic colours. Between the shoe and the attachment end, the sides have moulded 'folds'.The remains of the iron tang survive, located in the slot on the underside of the end-cap. Dimensions are:Length 18 mm Width 11.5 mm Thickness 8 mm Weight 8.199 grams.
