Description & identification The reported object is a decorative gold posy ring. The ring consists of a thin gold band, D-shaped in section, with a tightly set repeating pattern of tooled S-shaped indentations on the external surface, possibly for enamel, although none appears to have survived. The internal surface in engraved with an inscription which reads ‘Though absent yet constant’ in italic letters in sentence case. A complete lead alloy weight dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1700). The weight is bun-shaped with a flat base and rounded face. The face is deeply inscribed with VIII which attests to its weight as nearly 8oz. The object has a dark cream patina. Dimensions: Diameter 45mm; width 17mm; weight 214.84g The weight almost corresponds with the mass of 8 oz under the ‘binary’ averdepois system that was standardised in 1588 (1992, 44).

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative, Hinged brooch dating to c.AD 50-120. See Mackreth (2011) CD H. The brooch is almost complete with just the pin. The wings are wide and tubular with a circular cross section and a broad cap at each end. In the centre of the wings is the stub of the pin hinge. Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, Walton Rogers form B. Eight deep symmetrically distributed cuts radiate from the hole on the lower side [as cast – perhaps the upper side as used]. Though tidy enough to be deemed decoration, such features are actually rare on whorls of this simple form, and so many such cuts are perhaps an unparalleled feature. Copper alloy signet ring. A thin cast D-section band of width 4.2mm and thickness 2mm with an oval matrix brazed to it. The matrix bears a deeply incised field leaving a curvilinear initial letter – possibly G or T – with a possible bifoliate crown above it, all reserved to form an imprint (Bryony Pateman 2008; An illustrated guide to Collecting Seals, Whitehall Press, London, page 127). A cylindrical case with a single moulding at its ends is clenched behind to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin [now lost]. The wings are clasped by a D-section bow with a longitudinal ridge or step along either side. Lead pot mend. A large cast plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall of thickness 4mm. The inner side of the plug [as poured] bears a scratched graffito resembling a kite, with a central cross for struts. The finder kindly suggests this may represent a mitred face, though there are no features to suggest eyes, mouth or nose.. Patinated. The neat finish might commend a Roman date. Two similar cylindrical objects of sheet metal (a and b), apparently rolled with butted seams, and both bearing groups of two or four neatly circumferentially incised lines. The finder reports the objects were closely associated if not interleaved. Similar objects have been speculatively identified as needle cases of late medieval date or more authoritatively as ramrod pipes from muskets of early post-medieval date, albeit the construction seems rather light for the latter usage. This item consists of an oval metal locket frame with coveres that open on both faces, with hinges that formerly attached the frame to its counterpart cover. An oval pane of thin clear colourless glass remains in the frame on both faces, within an upstanding rim.
