Copper alloy mount. A cast rectangular plate which has been bent to penannular form. A series of incised chevrons appear on the outer side, though with a zone along one edge of the series undecorated. Probably originally of annular form with a butted seam, now partly flattened. Abraded. A function as a binding might be implied by the annular form. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1400 Length (as found): 19.5mm, Width: 7.4mm, Thickness: 1.5mm, Weight: 2.35gms

Copper alloy unidentified object. A rectangular sheet metal plate with a series of closely spaced [8 per cm] fine grooves of length 15mm extending from one straight edge, and with faint traces of grooves and a split in the opposite side. Probably for a craft usage. Marks of this form on bones have been associated with the making of pins, on ‘pinner’s bones’, though at a larger scale. Similar close spacing is also seen on comb teeth, so this object might have figured in the cutting of comb teeth – small one-piece bone combs for beards and moustaches are known fro…

The block and quillons are decorated by deeply incised chevrons with a field of angled cuts on both sides; three deep cuts also confer texture on the upper surface of the fan-shaped element. Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, Walton Rogers form B. Eight deep symmetrically distributed cuts radiate from the hole on the lower side [as cast – perhaps the upper side as used]. Though tidy enough to be deemed decoration, such features are actually rare on whorls of this simple form, and so many such cuts are perhaps an unparalleled feature. They might serve as tying notches, though a primary use as a whorl or a secondary use as a fishing line would usually require only one tying notch. Patinated. The spindle …

Lead pot mend. A large cast plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall of thickness 4mm. The inner side of the plug [as poured] bears a scratched graffito resembling a kite, with a central cross for struts. Copper alloy unidentified objects. Two similar cylindrical objects of sheet metal (a and b), apparently rolled with butted seams, and both bearing groups of two or four neatly circumferentially incised lines. The finder reports the objects were closely associated if not interleaved. Similar objects have been speculatively identified as needle cases of late medieval date or more authoritatively as ramrod pipes from muskets of early post-medieval date, albeit the construction seems rather light for the latter usage. The tubes have both been opened by light squashing. Suggested date: Unkn…

Silver disc. A small coin-sized disc – quite possibly a demonetised coin -  with both sides bearing  groups of parallel and individually incised lines, some lines and groups crossing others - possibly cross-hatched zones flank a plain central zone of lines running in one direction. This at least is the appearance of the outer side of a curled-up object; the inner surface appears similarly treated though lines become gouges here in a less tidy treatment.
