Probably a Medieval ecclesiastical floor tile dating from the later 15th century. Only a fragment (c. 1/4) of the original tile survive. All surfaces are very worn, probably because of its disposal in the R Calder (below Whalley Abbey). However, some amber/green glaze is still visible in the crevices of the decoration. The fabric is pink and slightly laminated/oxidised firing. The base is sandy, but there is no evidence for keying. With counter relief/line impressed decoration: a central eight-petalled flower/daisy with a smaller impressed flower in the corner. Presumably, this patter…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Cast copper alloy coin weight, square in plan and flat in profile with chamfered edges. The weight has four annulets on each face, one in each corner, and a rectangular stamp with a lion passant on both sides, between two of the annulets. The weight is roughly the equivalent to 80 grains or perhaps a 16th-century Angel (gold coin). But it is more likely that the four annulets represent four penny-weights or deniers if it is a continental coin weight. There are many varieties of the lion countermark. Biggs (1995) dates these weights to c.1600 - 1850 on pages 19-20. Similar example…
