Near-complete early Anglo-Saxon brooch. The headplate is a rounded semi-circle, with large stamped double-crescent or horseshoe-like punchmarks around the edges. The foot below the bow has a pair of lappets (one now incomplete), and there is another pair of semi-circular projections close to the missing terminal of the foot. There are similar punchmarks around the footplate. Pin missing. This brooch is a distinctive type, related to the Continental radiate-headed series, which might perhaps be termed a miniature bow brooch. It dates to the fifth or sixth centuries AD. Several similar …

Two pieces of copper-alloy strip, 13 mm wide, each broken at a rivet hole at both ends. The holes are circular and 4 mm in diameter. The strips are each decorated with a row of punched circles nearly 2 mm in diameter which run down each long edge. The punch has a slightly straighter edge along one side of the circle, and these straight edges are lined up on one side along the edge, and on the other side towards the middle, giving a neat appearance. At one end of one strip the punch has been held at an angle so that a crescent rather than a circle results. The strips are corroded to a …

Equal-armed brooch with triangular head and foot plates with rounded edges. Small punched ring motif around edges of head and foot. Integral catchplate and perforated lug for pin on back, but pin missing. Compare IOW-A1F47D, BUC-F80606, etc. The dating of these brooches is helped by one having been found in a grave at Frilford, now in the British Museum (1867,0204.8).

A 6th century gold bracteate, found whilst searching with a metal-detector as part of an archaeological investigation. The bracteate is made of gold. The central design is carried out in well-executed pressblech technique, and is of an animal in Style I, a basic ribbon-shaped animal with the eye close to the loop, but with limbs nearly unidentifiable, around a central 'dimple' (seen on some other bracteates). The central design is enclosed within three concentric rings of punched decoration. The outer ring is on the edge of the disc and gives the impression of a bead rim. These i…

A complete copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon annular brooch frame. This frame is roughly circular in shape and measures c44mm in external diameter and cc28mm in internal diameter. This frame has a rectangular pin hole, measuring 4mm by 2.5mm in size, it has rounded corners. There are traces of corroded iron around this pin hole and on the opposite side of the frame, this is presumably the remains of an iron pin, now missing. A cast copper alloy foot fragment from an Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch of Martin's type 2.1.3. The fragment is the form of an animal head with prominent eyes. The nose of the animal has a double chevron on it. The expanded, rounded nostrils have a multiple line chevron across the top and a border of punched dots along the rounded edge. At the terminal of the nostrils is a projecting loop, which is turned 90ยบ to the brooch. On the back of the brooch there are traces of iron corrosion, which would suggest the brooch had an iron pin. There are however, some traces of iron corrosion on t…

The front originally had a central circular boss, which has now been damaged with an irregular hole in the centre. Around the boss are traces of punched decoration, although the circular motifs portrayed are no longer clear. Anglo-Saxon copper alloy cruciform brooch fragment, 28mm long and 22mm wide. The object is in fair condition with a dark green patina. It represents part of the head plate and the top knob. The headplate is sub-rectangular and missing the centre and all of one side. It is decorated with a border of two lines of stamped dots along the top and down the surviving side; as there are also corrosion pits, it is difficult to distinguish the decoration from damage. The knob is cast in one with the headplate and is slightly domed on the front and hollowed on the reverse. It has a waist and …

One element from a hollow silver cufflink, made from thin and now fragmentary sheet. The front is stamped with a portrait bust apparently of Charles II, crowned, within a beaded border. The separate back has the remains of a maker's mark, possibly a TS in a shaped shield above a star. Given the possible identity of the bust, the object can be tentatively dated to 1660-1685.
