Copper-alloy buckle plate from composite buckle of probable early medieval or medieval date (c. 800 - 1500 AD). The buckle plate is flat and rectangular, with a rectangular pin notch at one end. The other end is rounded with bi-foliate knops at the corners, one of which has broken off in antiquity. A Post Medieval lead token dating to the c. 17th or 18th century AD. Each face of the token depicts crossed anchors, which have been stamped and not cast. Lead tokens depicting a single anchor with rope are relatively common finds in certain areas of the county (see for example SUR-2A14C1; DUR-5AD3AD; YORYM-075F05 and others from the Tyneside area), however this crossed anchor design cannot be paralled in the available literature. A second token with crossed anchors was found close to this example which suggests a contemporary loss (see BERK-42160E). Lead tokens have a huge range o…

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Post Medieval lead Russian Bale seal, of the early to mid 18th century. On the "Obverse" there are three lines of letters in raised script; CO [.] / OBK / 1731. The Reverse also has three lines of script which are not very clear; [...] B / HCRH / 175 [.]. Probably used for bags of flax seed or bales of flax stems which would have come out of one of several ports, all using 'SPB' for their hemp seals before the year 1829 as a certification of the flax bracking (inspection) by the Russian Empire. SPB does not mean this seal came from St Petersburg. Instead the seal could have been att…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper mount, possibly a Roman horse harness fitting or pendant, but possibly a much later (medieval) strap hanger. Somewhat triangular or pelta-shaped in plan form, the broad end is semi-circular with concave longitudinal sides. The apex has a small bulge and the broad semi-circular end, perhaps unusually, has the hook and the fixing holes, one of which has lost its outer rim. The fixing holes each have a stamped circle design to one surface. Overall, the surface is a rough mottled brown-green patina. This is perhaps an unusual style for this device and I can find no pa…
