Record ID: NLM-688964
Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy figurine. Pressed metal naturalistically rendered concavo-convex skull, of a narrow and elongated form possibly emphasised by light squashing. Traces of black coating appear on the dome of the skull, perhaps polished by wear against clothing. The memento mori was a motif which gained understandable currency in times of Plague, in the later 14th century as in the later 17th. The black coating may hint at a later date in the available range. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1350-1700 Length: 23.6mm, Width: 11.4mm, Thickness (wall): 0.4mm, Weight: 1.01gms.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small seal matrix, of probable Medieval dating (1200-1400 AD), featuring decoration of two semi circles, separated at their straight edges by three horizontal dots. It is possible that the slightly larger semi-circle was intended to represent a simplified form of an animal; perhaps a bear or boar. While it is in an overall good state of preservation, the loop appears brittle. From the handle flowing down into the seal matrix itself, the shape changes slightly. Nearer the handle it is more hexagonal, but upon reaching the seal matrix itself, it rounds out into a circular shape. …

Copper alloy furniture fitting. Cast knob with a flat-ended cylindrical lug at its outer end, a rounded and waisted body with turned incised lines on its widest part, collared at the base with a waisted and burred basal projection which has been hammered. Traces of a black coating or polish appear at the outer end. The finder kindly suggests a Roman date citing SF-BF82A5 as a parallel. However, the black coating is more likely to have arisen from treatment with oil or lacquer in the early post-medieval period, and the form may here be vaguely Neo-Classical rather than antique. Suggeste…
