Copper alloy brooch . Sheet metal brooch formed as an eight-lobed plate [one lobe lost and two detached] with drilled or stamped holes between each pair of lobes. The function is indicated by the seat for a light pin on the back and a loop to receive the end of the pin on the detached fragment. Both sides bear black paint or lacquer, shiny on the display face and dull behind. Possibly a keepsake made by a craft apprentice – in common with many such items it takes an unusual form of rarified appeal. Single, trapezoidal loop, copper alloy Medieval to Post-Medieval buckle. The frame has a rectangular cross-section and the widest end is slightly narrowed. The frame looks to have a black lacquer-like coating, breaking down to a reddish brown metal underneath. Trapezoidal buckles such as this were in use during the 14th century but were also recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose in the mid-16th century. The surface condition of this example is suggestive of a more Post Medieval date. Circa AD 1400-1650. Length 26.0mm, Width 29mm, T…

A small and incomplete lead object, possibly a heraldic badge of Post medieval date, about AD 1700 - 1900, shaped like the head of a dragon. The object is sub-rectangular in cross-section and fairly flat, and is S shaped, broken at one end and terminating in two lobes at the other, which could be interpreted as the snout of a dragon or other beast. Another scroll on the top of the "head" could be ears, but these projections appear to be incomplete. The neck has a hollow along the centre of both faces and there is the suggestion of transverse lines. There a…

A broken leg/foot fragment from a Medieval/Post Medieval, cast, copper alloy, probable small cauldron. Broken upper wide section, tapering down towards the foot with trilobed cross-section. There is an unusual either moulded or drilled out narrow groove across the upper surface from the flat back surface towards the ridged front surface. This has created a weakness and probably contributed to the fracture at this point. There is only a little wear and black lacquer remaining on half the surface, otherwise a matt green lightly corroded surface. The black lacquer continues under the nar…

Copper alloy possible vessel fragment. A fragment of thin sheet with one straight edge, curved at its ends and thinned and broken along its remaining long edge. Two holes appear to have been punched from the same side. Black material forms a coating on either side; this might arise from the post-medieval treatment of metalwork with oil or lacquer, or more probably from sooting if this object had indeed formed part of a vessel used over the hearth.
