Copper alloy unidentified object. A thick [2.5mm] sub-rectangular or trapezoid plate with two corners crisply folded over at one end, and split at the other end to receive a thinner [0.8mm] inserted copper alloy sheet, the ragged edge of which protrudes at the side and end. A pair of stout flat-headed rivets [of shank diameter 7.2mm and length 6.7mm] pass through both the split end and the enclosed sheet to reassure the union, and are hammered and burred so as to now slightly protrude from what is taken as the display side of the object. A circular hole of diameter 9mm has been punche…

A complete copper-alloy Acorn shaped finial, dating probably from the Post-Medieval period c. AD 1600 - 1900. The object has been cast and is three dimensional with a small boss on its top measuring 3.9mm in diameter and raised 2.9mm. The acorn is positioned on a rectangular base plate measuring 25.0mm x 18.0mm. A thin, roughly circular piece of thin copper-alloy sheet is held between the base plate, and a rectangular bottom plate which measures 29.4mm x 28.0mm. The centre stem of the finial perforates all of these and has been hammered over rivet-like to hold the pieces together. It …

A cast copper-alloy artefact of uncertain function possibly a decorative plaque / inlay of post medieval date - most probably 16th century. The fragment is irregular in plan being broadly lyre in shape ( a wasted oval) terminating in a broken sub-rectangular projection. The upper surface has a decorative cast design comprising loose vegetal / foliate scrolls against a black coloured inlay. The reverse of the plate is flat and undecorated - there is no sign of fixing points anywhere on the piece - hence it being described as an inlay or plaque. The artefact is of a mid green colour wh…

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A segment, perhaps a little less than one quarter, of an annular object of estimated diameter 90mm. The outer edge is lightly scalloped and the inner edge smooth, with a sharp step between the level of the two. The flat surface adjacent to the scalloped edge bears diagonal filing marks. The object is thickly covered with a black semi-matt material, possibly relating to the early medieval custom of treating metalwork with linseed oil. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast bar of square section, narrower in the middle and expanded towards its ends. One end, slightly narrower [c.9mm square before the end] forms a rounded blunt terminal while the other, slightly thicker [[c.10mm square before the end] is broken just after a constriction where it departs from a square to a round section. Traces of black coating appear on all four sides of the object. The object appears curved, though whether this feature was original, is the result of heavy wear on the central part, or arises from damage, remains uncertain. The finder…

Fragment from a composite object comprising four annular elements (all partly broken, to varying degrees), each with a single triangular spur, and of rectangular section, of thickness 2mm. These are mounted on a spindle of diameter 5mm, burred at either end to retain these moving parts. This may be from machinery, or a tool used to work on machinery.
