A complete cast and decorated lead alloy tobacco box lid knop / handle. The knop is broadly oval in plan and irregular in profile. The central knop is decorated as a flower. It has a central raised boss, which expands into a series of radiating lentoid shaped petals. It is likely that these were originally coated with a black coloured surface which has since decayed. The neck below the knop of the lid becomes narrow before expanding outwards in a slanting platform with the remains of the rivet protruding out from underneath. The artefact is in a worn but fair condition. Similar exampl…

County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late medieval or early post-medieval (1400-1600) chape from a dagger scabbard. The chape is made from folded copper-alloy sheet that has been crimped and hammered at the edges to create the form. It is an irregular sub-rectangular shape, with tapering edges in plan and an irregular oval shape in cross section. The chape is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy which has been rolled to form a tube. Movement in the soil has opened this overlapping tube up and the lower part is lost to a patinated tear. A single rivet hole pierces one side positioned on the upper edge and a single…

The fitting has a central horizontal bar from which two opposing crescentic shaped hooks extend. All the surfaces are slightly rounded having bevelled edges.
