Copper alloy possible offcut. Triangular fragment of sheet, lightly crumpled at its wider end, with sooting or black coating visible under magnification. While this might conceivably be a plain strap end fragment in view of its rounded narrow end, there is no means of attachment and no more obvious decoration, though Thomas notes (2003) that plain strap ends accompany those decorated styles included in his typology. Copper alloy ring. Cast round section ring, markedly thinned by internal wear at one point on its band. The form might be associated with the fastening of straps in Iron Age or even earlier times, particularly for sword gear and horse gear. However, material from the Roman period onwards is more prominent among accompanying finds, while patches of black shiny material on the object recall the post-medieval habit of treating metal with oil or lacquer. Lead possible weight. Cast truncated conical weight with two or three adjacent flattened facets on its sides and a central aperture of diameter 3.3mm. Both the upper and lower flat surfaces appear to have been knife-cut to achieve this form. Traces of black paint, polish, or even white metal plating, appear overall. The mass does not suggest use for measuring weight. The hole might permit use as a line weight, or possibly as a playing piece for use with a holed board were a wood or bone peg inserted. There is no trace of damage from such an insertion on the base, however. Suggested da…

Probably a finger-ring of Post-Medieval to Modern date. If the artefact is not a finger-ring it is probably a ferrule. The object is made from a lead-alloy, probably pewter. It weighs 4.10g and is made from a rectangular length of metal that has a width of 8.2mm and thickness of 1.2mm. Use of a flexible dress-maker's tape-measure shows that the metal has a length of c.62.0mm. The strip has a rectangular cross-section. The strip has been curved round to form a loop. The loop was probably originally circular but is now squashed into a sub-circular shape. No obvious sign of a join is vis…

Copper alloy possible ingot. A small probably hammered oval pellet of metal with a black surface; an oval mark on one side may be a stamped impression; the opposite side is flat. This is an example of a range of small base metal objects, often resembling the droppings of a small animal, or in this case, a coffee bean or currant, and speculatively suggested to have served as ingots. A Medieval-Post Medieval C13-18th, crudely cast, copper alloy, medium size, annular ring. Thought to be, in most cases, a belt fitment, secured to waist belts normally with a leather thong, for suspending a purse, knife or similar object. Probably a multi-purpose item used by the poorer classes. Slightly flattened sexfoil cross-section with hand bevelled edges possibly with traces of black bitumen or lacquer. Some wear otherwise a dark green/brown patina with a little surface corrosion. This is likely to date between 1200-1799. Ref. History Beneath Our Feet, Brian Read, Anglia Publish…

A pair of copper-alloy sub-triangular plates of unknown purpose or date. The plates have two coincident perforations, one close to the centre and the other near to one point. It is possible that the object is a strap-end; however, it may have served a different purpose. There is no decoration on any surface, but traces of a black coating can be observed on two of the surfaces. This type of coating is often seen on dress accessories and is sometimes referred to as lacquer (Buckles 1250-1800, Whitehead, 2003. p8).
