Roman to Medieval copper alloy mount. It is square in plan and sub rectangular in section. It is decorated in relief with a flower that consists of four lentoid petals extending to each corner from a central boss. The central pellet retains the original black finish. On one edge there is a raised border but this is either absent or lost from the other three edges. The reverse face is still fully coated in black but is otherwise undecorated although there are remnants of a lip, up to 1.5mm high, on three edges. Dates to between c43 and c1500 AD, probably Early Medieval. The length i…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap end fragment. Cast plate with its straight sides converging on a beast head terminal with large hollowed swept-back ears and a deeply incised line around its muzzle, with a less prominent incised line closer to the tip of the snout. The plate bears a bordered panel of straight interlaced strands, and is of Thomas Class A Type 2. The form is Middle Saxon though the simple plaited decoration was also favoured in the Viking Age. A black coating may represent degraded silver plating or its sulphide base, as the interlace [now appearing as if reserved] shows strongly aga…

An incomplete copper alloy hooked tag of Early Medieval date (AD 850-1150). Class B, type 1. The object is composed of a triangular plate that tapers to a downward projecting rectangular spur. Object type: BELL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An Early-Medieval copper-alloy bell. The damaged bell chamber would originally have been of hexagonal section, with straight sides tapering towards the flat top, where there is a damaged loop. The sides surrounding the basal opening are heavily damaged, but what remains suggests that they were of typical form for this type of bell; slightly concave, with a lobe extending from each of the six corners. The clapper is absent, although there is a possible pair of wire holes within the unidentified, hard, black substance located on the underside of the apex. The outer surface of the bell r…

An Early-Medieval copper-alloy bell. The bell chamber is of hexagonal section with straight sides tapering steeply towards the top, where it is surmounted by a damaged rounded loop. The six sides that surround the open bottom end are concave, giving the bell a fluted appearance, and have incurved bases. creating a knop or foot on each of the six corners. The bell's clapper is missing but two small holes, set within an unidentified substance beneath the point on the inside, mark its original position. The outer surfaces of the bell are corroded in places and possibly bear traces of a b…
