Medieval copper alloy oval buckle frame with an offset, narrowed bar and a broad outside edge which is concave on the reverse. Both the convex front of the edge and the sides are decorated with twelve radial grooves which are inlaid with a black material, perhaps niello or lacquer. Weight 1.98g. Length 14mm. Width 19.5mm. Late 12th - 13th century.

It consists of a raised sub-conical bezel with a sub-circular sunken centre in which there is an incomplete shiny turquoise setting, probably glass. Incomplete Roman copper alloy Knee brooch, Mackreth 2011 KNEE Br 1.a.1, with the upper end of a pierced tab on top of the head and part of the catchplate missing. On the front of the hollow-backed bow there are four round cells and a long narrow cell running the full length, all inlaid with dull grey material, At the foot a short projection is curled forward. It fits into Hunter's (2010) class B4a, a non-enamelled, zoomorphic brooch with scalloped decoration radiating from the central boss. The brooch is now incomplete, but originally probably consisted of a lozengiform frame with a relatively large circular lobe in each angle, decorated with a recessed ring-and-dot pattern. Notes: From the 17th to early 19th century silver coins were often heavily worn or clipped and were therefore traded by weight rather than face value.
