A medieval cast copper-alloy suspension mount for a purse or other small item c.1250-1400 Description:The mount is formed from two equal semi-circular arches meeting at the centre with the outer ends of the projecting as straight attachment bars with squared end knops. An outer face is visible having been slightly bevelled along the arches leaving them angular D-shaped in cross-section with more rounded outer edges. Clear filing marks are visible from finishing. it has an even green patination. Measurements: 31.51mm long, 8.57mm wide, 1.73mm thick and 1.31g in weight. Discuss…

A fragment of a late Medieval to early Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy purse frame, circa AD1450 - AD1550. The fragment represents a short, slightly curved length of frame which is "V" shaped in cross-section. It is decorated on one side with a pattern of crosses, which are formed by double-stranded lines inlaid with niello. About 70% of the inlay remains intact. Both ends of the length show breaks that were made in antiquity, one end shows half of a hole which would have aided fixing to the fabric of the purse by sewing. Medieval purse bar; cast copper alloy purse bar of probable 15th century date. The bar is flat and of rectangular cross-section with no terminals. There are, however, expanded collars to either side of the central boss. The central boss is large and chunky and roughly shield-shaped in profile with, again, a rectangular cross-section. A cast copper-alloy fragment of a purse bar with only a section of one arm surviving. At one end there is sub-cylindrical terminal with a slightly convex end (L.: 8mm, D.: 9.05-6.8mm). The terminal tapers slightly towards the junction with the arm. The object then narrows to form a short circular-sectioned element 3.9mm in diameter, before expanding to form a wide circular collar at the end of the arm (L.: 5.9mm, D.: 7.5mm). The worn, D shaped, central block of a copper alloy purse bar. The two larger faces of the object have a raised lattice pattern. The spaces of this are inlaid with an unidentified, white metal [possibly silver]. The scars of the two missing bars that held the purse fabric. The 5.42mm hole through at right angles to the bars would have been for the suspension loop of the bag which is now missing

Fragment of a cast copper alloy purse bar with an inscription, originally inlaid in silver, on both faces. Section generally rectangular 10 x 4mm, the surviving terminal has a round section. On the underside are two integrally cast loops. The inscription reads: AV: MARIA [Ave Maria - Gracia Plena] Hail mary -full of Grace -TECVM [Dominus - Tecum] The Lord is with you Length 80.9mm, Mass 25.03g.
